help firm up my sagging crank

Post by joatmon »

ok, I know what you're thinking. Especially one of you, you know who I mean, but you're all wrong, its a car window issue The manual windows in my 03 base vibe have worked well for coming on eight years now, 234K+ miles (that's a lot of time in the car, lots of down and up cycles) except recently the driver's door window has developed a problem. Cranks down no problem, but when cranking it up, it feels like binds. I have to either turn the crank an inch at a time, let it settle, crank another inch, let it settle, step it like that all the way up, or if I use my right hand to lift the front up while cranking, it cranks up easily. It's as if the front of the window is sagging and some part of the window regulator is binding.I have not yet taken the door apart to see what's going on in there. I know there's an issue with windows binding and glass shattering on power window models, there was a recall, or at least a TSB, but nobody's been talking about a similar problem in the manual window models. Do you think it could be the same issue/fix as the documented power window problem, or is it more likely some part is just worn out and I need to replace something?

HAHA grrrr you make it so difficult to not make an off topic comment LOLMy guess is it just needs to be lubed, hard to say unless you pop off the door panel and see if you can notice anything lose or broke.

x2 on the hard lubing of the crank. Not that your current method of gentle tugging isn't effective, it just won't last forever. it's early.. still on coffee #1.

^ Then surgery is required as you've seized up some linkages.... probably from too much hand-cranking over the years...Pull off the cover. Once you've lubed up the lower track you'll be able to crank'er like you used to!!!

got nothing to do with me...no hand-cranking needed if I was involved and, of course, yours most likely wouldn't be that clean or big

the fix was a bit of lubricant sprayed into the front channel the window slides up and down in. The bolts in question for the similar power window issue were plenty tight. there's really no way a bigger one could fit in there without extensive modification to the mounting holes.

glad to hear all it needed was a little lube.did you use white lithium grease? That would last a lot longer than anything else and most likely what was used at the factory.
