http://autospies.com/news/Volk...9934/6 speed manual...Check Turbo 4 engine...Check AWD...Check 4 door hatch...Check I'm sold! And even the price won't be too bad at an estimated 33k. It looks mean, gives me the AWD I love and still hauls buttowsky and groceries. What's not to love. Now if only the others would take a clue and offer something this fun. And don't mention the current Subie cause they are a little too egg shaped for me.
good choice I was just reading in Car & Driver (or something similar) that the new Golfs/GTI's are really top notch, and don't suffer from the same cheapie build quality as the Jettas have of late.

The memory of my 1986 VW Golf has not yet faded sufficiently to try it again. Maybe if they included a 10 year 100,000 mile zero deductible bumper to bumper warranty I might reconsider.

I already like the current GTI and Golf, but the lack of AWD really bugs me since I live in rainy, sloppy, slushy, snow area with lots of leaves, hills, turns, etc. It's all I want in a car. Upscale comfort and sophistication without boy-racer looks at a pricepoint I like. It's got plenty of power and a good 'ol stick shift. Yummy. Comes here in 2012 I'll have owned this car for a little over 6 years and be looking to upgrade. I'll take mine in plain white.
Say it isn't so. I was looking a VW recently and then did some research. Boy they have some serious reilablity issues. Get an AWD Vibe or Matrix and put an SC or TC on it.

So is that a replacement to the R32? I am assuming yes as it would be pointless to have 2 identical cars at the same price point. I think I answered my own question.I do love the look!
Vibe is gone and will be missed as I've gone country style

Granted, they do have their issues, but I've found them to be a breeze to work on. Parts are generally super cheap and readily available (although I realize they probably weren't as cheap back in the 80's). As far as I know, the only recall they had was for a problem with the heater core. I also own a 90 Golf GL that was super-reliable when I was hauling myself around the country in it. Nary a breakdown (well, maybe one or two). It wasn't until my 99 MK4 Jetta that I started feeling the crush of VW build quality issues (that's the car that drove me away from VW and into a Vibe).

What's not to love?$33,000 I agree with Jake75: VW would have to offer me 100k in warranty to get me to try their products again. Yes, they are easy to work on. Problem is, I was working on it a lot.

Nice looking but the past reliability issues and not to mention the way that the cars are assembed making routine maintenance "fun"...I hope you get it though, it will be a hoot (while it lasts)!!!
my roommates have a 2008 rabbit (golf)...ya I wouldnt touch a vw.... Friend has a r32...yup..when it breaks...its thousands with out a blink of an eye... :s
What's different about this car from those mentioned. The R32 used the venerable yet breakable 3.2L VR6. A problematic engine to begin with. The Golf R uses the 2.0T engine with a Haldex AWD system which is an amazing drivetrain. Not to mention warranties would cover most anything and extendeds are available. Still worth the cost considering I was looking at the Subaru WRX and to get one comparable equipped in Limited trim would put me in this price point anyways.I'll own the Matrix come January and most likely privately sell it or trade in if I need too. I've already contacted the dealer and been put on the list
I don't know, Whelan? I too have not been too impressed w/VW's record of late, and though I have heard of their "improvements in quality," they have yet to prove it by me.Since the days of the Pennsylvania made Rabbits, their reliability record has been in the toilet.. and that's quite a long time for them to come back just like that.OK, so you spend +/-$33k on the car, and another $1-2k on an extended warranty, would you want your car in the shop 20% of the time, even if it was all covered? It took me ten years to talk my wife out of getting a so called New Beetle. And even when we ended up with the Vibe, she was STILL looking at those PITA POS cars. I said, "Dear," called her dear, "I used to work on VW's! I used to buy and sell them and believe me, they are junk!!"See, she had a '72 original Beetle when I met her. We were going to try and rebuild it for her, but y'know, life, funds, house, time, etc. She wants a replacement in the form of a new one in the worst way. I'm not sure I'm out of the woods yet!

Women like Volkswagens (Golfs especially)... and for the life of me, I don't know why!!!! 90% of the Golf Drivers around here are hot chicks...My Wifes sister has one... a 2006 Golf w/ gas engine & slushbox. It has spent a LOT of time at the dealer getting fixed... those power windows in particular are crap and break constantly and the tranny's been out of the car a few times! I drove it once, what can I say besides gutless, slow, sloppy and noisy. I got ragged on when I bought my Sunfire in late 04... but once I drove it out of the showroom it never again saw the inside of the dealer (or any other repairshop for that matter)!!!
Know what's weird? A guy I know (born in Germany, living in the Netherlands) tells me that in Germany, their version of Consumer Reports rates VW, Mercedes and BMW quite high for reliability, while Honda is considered a cheap, unreliable import. Not sure if that's the hometown press or not, but he believes it.

Quote, originally posted by Whelan »VW's built in Mexico have LOADS of issues. Those that are imported (GTI, R, etc.) are highly rated. Go figure.VW is weird like that. In the MK2 VW world (86-92) Mexican and German built cars are considered to be higher quality, while the US and Brazilian built cars tend to be rustbuckets with electrical issues. For some reason, "identical" cars built at different plants got a different quality of sheet metal, different electrical systems altogether, different headlight designs, different fuel injection depending on the year and model, had different seam sealer and rust protection applied, etc etc. I know some of that has to do with DOT specs from various countries, but still.. it's too bad they haven't gotten past that yet to make a more uniform product.
