1zz + turbo+ 6 speed= awsome

Post by Faultline »

Long time guys, I have been busy with work, but I miss the boards. I posted this in F/I because I broke my tranny. I broke my tranny because of the turbo. Most of you know that when you add power to the drive train, you stress stuff out. Something has to give. So you beef up your clutch, or you get stickier tires , and now you break the axle or tranny, or something. Before I make you all worry that you are going to break your tranny, I will tell you that I am running taller tires, and that may have something to do with it. I tried taller tires 225/50/17 (should be 225/45/17) to get better launches at the track a few years ago. (Sad, but Lacr is closed now.)My car is 2003 , and I have thought about getting a 6 spd alot anyway, this just gave me the exuse. I picked up a 2005 vibe gt 6 spd tranny with 34k miles on it for $800.00. I had some concern ,because I went by Staffords shop and looked at a celica 6spd tranny. It is set up different , some of the outside stuff is inverted , and wont work on a swap. Mike Stafford warned me of this, and told me to look for a Vibe , Matrix, or corrolla 6spd and not the celica.I took my old tranny to the the salvage yard with me, and it was uncanny how everything matched up. All the holes on the bell housing were identical, and the shift linkage stuff looked identical. The only thing that was different was the length, and you could tell that the 6spd was about 2 inches longer, and you figured it needed that for the extra gear along the main shaft. I did not install it my self. I bought a new ACT clutch , street disc with a HD pressure plate. (235 ft#'s of torque)(feels nice) Amazingly, I did not need a new shifter. Everything bolted up perfectly. All the linkage cables worked and fit in the loops just right. The only thing that is wrong is the pattern on the shifting nob. (If someone tries to steal my car, they will have a hard time finding reverse .)For those who dont know, even the 5spd trannys on the celica and Vibe are different. 3rd and 4th gears are different ratios. The Vibe's are taller for better fuel economy. The Celica's are geared for performance. The 6spd gear ratios are the same on the Celica, and the Vibe/Matrix.WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!We all know that a 6spd is better...but believe it. I feel faster. I am breaking tires loose in 2nd gear, and I still have the taller tires. Every gear is only about a 1k drop on the tach with each shift. I land in each gear at what seems to be peak power. This is the best mod since the turbo, driving makes alot more sense now, and is more fun. This is huge!

Good to have you back Did you do anything to adjust the speedometer calibration, did the sender on the new tranny take care of that, do the taller tires offset the difference, or do you just ignore it?don't forget to update your signature

Celtic curse, I did not need a different axle. The only thing I changed was the tranny and the clutch, not the shifter or anything. Damronjr, yes , the car lives on, and in fact, I had it down in Sandiego 2 mondays ago at Jack Murphy Stadium. I watched Grandpa Favre get sacked a few times for my pure entertainment as I watched the Chargers decimate the NY Bretts. Joatmon, I am soon to get the correct tire size back on the car, it is not too far off , but 60mph is not quiete 60mph. As far as there being any difference in the sending unit of the 6 speed, I figured not, I dont really know. I know that the stock Vibe GT tires were 215/50/17... I am running 225/50/17's . The Stock base model was 205/55/16, or translates to 225/50/16 , or 225/45/17's . My recollection is that the tire diameter is 24.9" at 205/55/16 and 25.5" at 215/50/17 , and 25.9" at 225/50/17.The GT , then, came with 25.5" tires, as opposed to the base 24.9" That means it could be calibrated a little differently. Or it could just be a mute difference and the sending unit on the tranny is is the same calibration. hmmm. If I had the money I would have placed a Quaife LSD in the tranny before I installed it Next time. (yes , I wlll update my sig. ).

Are you expecting similar troubles from the six-speed? Is it a stronger transmission?

Nice to hear from you again! I always wondered if that swap would work. So the GT you picked up didn't have a stock knob?

That is also why many WRX/Impreza/LGT/Forester guys will switch to a 6MT if/when theirs dies. This is what I'm told.

Great to hear, Barry! Glad to see you are still pushing the envelop. Apparently, you still haven't had to go thru emissions testing yet? Haha.

I know this is an old thread, but wonder if there have been any updates/new info lately? After taking my car one day last week, my wife expressed an interest in getting more Zoom-Zoom out of the Vibe too. This is a first for her. She is usually pretty good squashing my automotive ideas, especially when its her car.Loud exhausts are out of the question. She HATES them. Turbos are out of the equation. And intakes do nothing or almost nothing so I won't waste my money on them either, plus they are "noisy," according to my wife. I was looking into the GReddy E-Manage, but further research shows that too will be a waste of money in the long run (Be D*mned OBDII cars!!)I had been thinking of upgrading the flywheel and clutch when the time comes for a while now, but also doing this 6-speed swap. When I mentioned before and she "squashed" that idea, but now I am seeing more light art the end of that tunnel. I know a new clutch would be necessary because of the spline count, but have you had any other problems with the new tranny and/or other drivetrain components not able to handle the load?
