Any experience with Dupli-Color Perfect Match paint?

Post by jscherf92 »

Ive got a pretty bad cosmetic issue on my drivers side, its and 05 Abyss so i know the paint code is 19U/WA546G, but I need to find the matching color in a spray can. Dupli-Color sells these perfect match sprays that supposedly match factory GM black and Toyota black among other brands, but i wont do me any good to paint it the wrong black. Are there any close matches, or would i be better off saving up and taking it to a body shop for some paint?

Yes, I do. Twice. With Abyss you will probably be all right, but my experience was with two white cars, probably one of the hardest colors to match: My wife's Vibe, as seen in my sig, and my Mazda3 HB. They didn't turn out so well. The hue is noticably off on both cars. With black, even metallic black, I think it would be harder for them to screw that up. The hardest part may be the metallic in the paint. It may not "lay" properly or may be too heavy. I found this out using regular Duplicolor touch up, trying to fix a scratch in my MIL's '03 Cavalier, which is kind of a metallic sable color. The repair looked way too silvery and after multiple tries, I could not find a way to blend it in well enough not to notice. I even tried dry brushing thinking it might lay in a little darker. No difference.

Since all cars are clear coated now, even if the color was a perfect match I don't think it would ever look right without some clear over the color coat.

Speaking for my experience, I did that too, and I used the "proper" Duplicolor clear coat. Still off. Actually, I couldn't tell the difference from before, except it was shinier, of course.
