Ive had this noise for a while now. Car is a 2005 Vibe with 90k miles. Upon start-up it makes a bunch of rattling' chirping noises while idling for several seconds. I also notice it just about everytime i take off from a stop, just for a second or so though. Ive heard about the marble in the can/ belt tensioner idea and tried to get a noise out of it but only heard squishy noise. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Does anyone have a sound clip link to the tensioner noise. I cant seem to find it. I may have to try to get audio of mine somehow. Thanks in advance
If you're describing the sound as a "chirp" and not a complete "rattle," I'll be surprised if it's NOT your tensioner. I am WAY overdue to have mine replaced (2006, started chirping at 40k), and what you describe is what I hear when I idle at lights. I just deal with it, as it's not out of control. But it sure bugs me, being the only thing "wrong" with my Vibe.
Well I don't know all that much about serpentine belts or belt tensioners because I've never had to work on one. I did some googleing on this though and apparently the belt tensioner spring can get worn out and weaken over time causing problems and needing replacement. http://www.cartechbooks.com/vs...DID=6heres a link perhaps this will help you diagnose the problem. It looks to contains some pretty good information. another one. http://autorepair.about.com/li...b.htm
After taking a better look at it, it does appear to be the tensioner. I am just not sure if i can fix the one thats there or If I have to relace the whole thing. I keep seeing post on here about fixing a pin???
