A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my 03 base vibe was louder than usual while going down the highway. Specifically around 65 mph it is the worse, below 60 mph and above 70 mph it is fine. It's a low bass/drone type sound (but is annoyingly loud inside the car). To me is sounded like it was the exhaust. I took it to a local muffler shop and they said my resonator was bad, so I had them replace it. I picked the car up after work and I still had the same sound, only not quite as loud but still noticeable. So I took it back to them the next day and they said everything on my exhaust checked out. They said is could be the tires as there were low and high spots on all of them - tread is getting low but they still have life left in them. The sound is only noticeable at 65 mph +/- but drives me crazy b/c I do a lot of highway driving. Thoughts?
Short of replacing them, cross rotate them. RF onto LR, Lf onto RR.Generally not good to change rotation direction of radials but it will reverse the rotation and if there is a rotation specific road noise being created by the tire it will change.IF it goes away and the tires are almost done, run them until they are done or the noise returns. Are you sure it isn't a wheel bearing going bad? I just went through that.Dave
If you have high/low spots on all of your tires, I would consider getting the alignment checked out.. Feathering or cupping is a sign of suspension problems.. Could also be a broken belt in a tire (semi common)
