Front Passenger Axle Issue

Post by mwahlquist »

Sorry I lost my original account info and had to create a new login just to post. I haven't posted in a long time on here, but I'm stuck with even the shop telling me a 3 wk wait on the part unless I can find on my own!2005 GT (vin L not 8)Front passenger Axle needs to be replaced, the CV joint is torn. Lost the clutch completely this weekend and the shop offered to replace the Axle for free if I can get them one before they replace the clutch.Shop (whom I greatly trust) said that the 6sp GT axle is different than the 5sp and they cant order it from any of their normal places. Told to try autozone, but no luck on confirming the difference in the 5 vs 6 sp part that the shop warned me about.Extensive searches on the forum, found someone that said something about dealer only parts, that you just had to get from them, but no confirmation.Anyone replaced this before? I need to get my hands on this ASAP!Thanks,Matt

car-part.com says Bruce Auto Parts in Mechanicsville VA has a used one for $50.As it turns out, I happen to have bought a C59 tranny from them two weeks ago, and was impressed, that yard has their act together compared to the yards around where I live.

is the axle shot or is it just the boot is torn? I haven't looked for a vibe CV boot, but I found Napa had boots for the front axles on my truck when autozone gave me a deer in the headlights stare

Replace the axles, especially since it's all apart. Better doing it now then having to do it later.

Thanks for the help guys! So far I haven't been able to find one. The one from Bruce isn't listed as being from a GT, and I haven't gotten a hold of them yet. I am finding all sorts of listings for GT automatic axles... which is pretty insane to me

it is just the boot, and the axle has NOT started making any noise yet. It has been torn for several months and I am getting a vibration at high speeds at worst, but no clicking or anything that i would expect. Told the shop to fix and leave the axle as is for now. Unless I find a part in the next 24 hours it will have to be a separate job. I can maybe replace it myself though.

Pontiac wants 1000 for just the axle... insane.a few hundred to replace the CV boot, but it is likely already damaged.Has no one else had a CV boot tear on a GT? I can't believe this is so difficult...

Toyota at times sells the repair boot, call a Toyo Dealer and see if they offer a repair kit for a 2005 Matrix XRS.

If its the inner one, (or if the inner and outer are the same) then searching for a CV boot for a 2005 Vibe GT at napaonline.com turns up an inner boot for $17, part number CVB 6862425

I may just have to do the boot for now as I have confirmed that the axle isnt made aftermarket yet.On another note the shop, whom again i trust, cannot seem to get the new clutch to work. Yesterday, it was installed and they couldnt get it in gear. Today after taking it all apart twice, they cant get it out of gear.... any suggestions, or do I need to move this to the tranny section? Thanks,

Clutch engaged or disengaged, shifting with the engine off shouldn't be a problem...

Consumer auto parts aka CAP, was a 6pd manual cv axle assembly for a vibe GT 2003-2006 for $85i broke my axle pretty much in half.I searched everywhere. Gm wanted $800 and toyota wanted $500.the CAP axle is mostly new, except for the shaft being a re-man.So order from them, at least they have the correct part.By the Way, if you rent the socket for the axle, it is NOT 32mm like the computer says.

rockauto.com sells this stuff for ~$100 per side or a little over for a re-manufactured one.
