Help with 09GT intake

Post by Dushibagels »

Hello, new to the forums here, Just bought an 09 vibe GT with the 2.4 engine. Can anyone recommend an ebay type short ram intake that would work for me. I'v used these styles of intakes for 7 years on multiple cars with no issues. I will not spend $250 on a name brand intake when all it is, is a piece of plastic tubing and a $10 filter (these things must have such a huge markup)I am only interested in the sound of the shortram style with a cone filter. All the searching I have done only results in older year vibes with the 1.8 engine. Thanks for the help guys!

The K&N Typhoon isn't very long so it shouldn't take too many parts. You will probably want to put a heat shield around the filter too. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Also, I see you're from Janesville. You should check out the WI GM-Tuners site .

Typing in '2009 Toyota Matrix intake' only yields a bunch of K&N Typhoon intakes.

There are a few cheaper ones for the Scion TC/XB but would probably require some modification

Thanks for the idea's so far. Has anyone just pulled out the silencer and maybe drilled some holes in part of the air box? I did that on my Ranger and it made it growl pretty nice

I know where your coming from, i've built all of my own intakes on previous vehicles. With this one though, i bought the K&N. The way the MAF is intigrated into the tubing makes it a much more difficult task to create your own.Good Luck

That's significantly cheaper than what I paid for mine in July of 2009.

Thanks again everyone. Most forums I think I would have gotten flamed by some 16yr old thinking they know cars since I don't want to spend $250 for an intake. But u guys rockI ended up just pulling out the silencer, it gave it more noise under acceleration which is what I wanted. I might replace what I think is the original toyota air filter with maybe a K&N.Cheers.

We're more about helping people than being mean to them .In addition to K&N, you may also want to check out aFe for really nice drop in filters. They have one that's comparable to K&N's (Pro 5 R) and they also have a dry one that doesn't require any re-oiling (Pro Dry S). I had the Pro Dry S in my mom's '09 GT for a while and it was a great filter. I didn't really notice any horsepower or gas mileage gains, but definitely a great quality product. You may also want to check out vibedrivermatt's garage. He was working on some "custom" mods to the factory intake setup on his '09 2.4L Base. He may be able to give you even more ideas for getting more sound and possibly a little more horsepower out of your factory setup for next to nothing .

It goes on the intake snorkle after the air box and ahead of the hose to runs to the vavle cover. The white thing is a plumbing cap that I used to cap mine. Whatever you use, it has to have an airtight seal. The thing to the right is the silencer tank and theres my lens cap to the camera. That's not a car part. whoops I did this and have a K&N drop it filter. My car seems to run awesome! I've also been filling it with Hess gas, which I think is helping it run good too. When I first got the K&N filter from the auto parts store (my first time using one), it was apparent that it's very high quality and I was happy to have gotten it.
