1.8L 2009 Vibe AT: Just completed a 1,290 mile RT plus a little in town driving from Columbus to Wilmington, NC and back. About 93% freeway. Got 32.5 mpg overall. I am satisfied especially since this is with probably 10% ethanol and summer gas formulation. Also, since my odometer under-reads by about 2% this is actually about 33.1 mpg and it was with a 350 lb passinger load (me 210, she 140) and considerable inanimate "baggage". I see some reports of up to 38 mpg and just shake my head. This mpg is consistent with a prior trip in June.

Heck - she's only 2/3rds of me! That's relatively skinny. Plus our driving weights include the weight of our Medicare cards, body piercings, tattoo ink, and assorted bling .

I was looking through some papers and saw the "sticker" for my 2009 Vibe - EPA highway rating was 31 mph. I was thinking it was 33 or 34. The "city" was 26 mpg. Glad to see I am doing a couple mpg over on the highway but am about 2.5 mpg lower on the city and that includes some city freeway driving. I think the many short trips do me in.

Nice numbers although I would have thought them to be a bit higher for the smaller engine. Your payload likely did play a role in the lower values. This past summer, us GT owners who made the Indy trip ALL reported similar, if not HIGHER numbers than what you reported, and we have the 2.4L engine! Then there's the stunt I pulled to where I got an honest, actual 37mpg (reported in an earlier post). Glad you are able to "get away" and drive your Vibe on various trips. Someday I too will be able to drive mine MORE (just turned 7000 miles).
Yep, weight means everything in a car's mileage. With my 1.8 2009 auto, I always get 29 or 30 around town (suburban driving) and 38 on the highway. Your gas mileage numbers will go up as your vehicle passes the 25,000 mile mark. I've been very pleased with my "Corolla's" mpgs. As for weight, it is usually only me and my umbrella.

I still think Toyota should examine some of those 1.8L engines where owners report 29/30 around town and 38 on the highway to see what manufacturing deviation might be responsible for such impressive mpg. Of course it could well be the driver, and other operational differences. Sometime when I am not in a hurry I am going to try to make that trip driving no more than 60 mph to see what that does.My 2003 Vibe 1.8L didn't show any improvement after 25,000 miles - sold it at 33,000 miles/ 6 years. At my present use rate, I won't hit 25,000 miles on my '09 until summer of 2013. But I am not unhappy with my mileage. I have had individual tankfuls that pushed high 30's but think there is a lot of variance in when the automatic gas pumps shut off. I am not one to pump gas after that automatic shut off.

yep, that all seems right. I do drive my car VERY hard, which is why I have brought my Vibe in twice for the tranny slamming when asking the car to go from fourth to second gear. The traffic here in the Delta Quadrant is the second worst in the country. I don't do any "all city" driving however, so I can't speak to what my mileage would be in total stop and go. I normally get 30 when I gas up at Costco each time after a week's worth of urban/suburban driving. I'll be heading to the Gamma Quadrant pretty soon and will see what my highway mileage is during the next two trips. I'll need to slow it down from my normal 75mph driving due to a recent speeding ticket.
Quote, originally posted by Old Tele man »39 mpg at 65 mph without a/cI can get that on flat road with no wind or idiot left lane bandits! but there's just too many variables here... if you can hold that speed with all the hills, wind, idiot drivers, lights, merging, ect then you're set!!! 55mph!!! It's just so hard to go that slooooow!!!

i averaged the same (well, very close) city vs highway in my old 2008 1.8L Base; 27-29 city and 29-31 highway. this was from mile 25 (new) to mile 31,000. overall average was 28.4 for the time i had the car.now that i have the GT and cant help but to step on it every chance i get, im averaging pretty darn low. i forget the numbers but they are written down in my MPG notepad.
...FWIW, those are 1½ years worth of actual "tank & speedometer" MPG-numbers, even though I do have a ScanGauge II installed....the newly introduced Ultra-Gauge (from China) is very low-priced and seems to be worth looking into...I have one and am testing it now on our '04 Vibe.

I've been using my 2010 1.8L base AT vibe to commute for the last month or so. ~55 miles each way of which, ~45 is non stop highway miles. I am very happy to report that I am averaging ~36-37 mpg.
