tire pressure monitoring system

Post by sassymcagirl »

I took my car in to a local reputable shop to have my tire pressure checked just before a trip. During this visit i learned that i had 2 nails in a tire, which they removed and "plugged". After we got on the road the tire pressure light came on.When i returned home i went back to this shop and they reset it after checking pressure. Here is the problem............. the light came on again, within 10min after leaving the shop.I went back a third time and they told me that the tire pressures were fine so I'd better take it to the dealership. Is it possible that the nail ruined the sensor? Or did this shop do something wrong when they repaired it?I have contacted the dealership and the cost to diagnose and repair this is just unaffordable for me at this time, yet i dont want to cause more damage by riding on this "problem".Would appreciate any help here.

Welcome to genvibe!Unlucky to have nails in the tire.If you have the manual handy, you can reset the TPMS yourself by following the procedure in the book (check the index under Tires for "Pressure Monitor System" for the page number). It's more than just pressing the button, as the tire shop was likely doing. If you don't have a manual, there are links in the forum to PDF versions online. You didn't mention what year your Vibe is, but if you search for "tpms reset", there will be a few posts you'll be interested in.

Belle Tire and Discount put less than the recommended on the sticker which is located on the driver's side door pillar. A few lbs of air missing and that TPMS will go on.

The only other thing listed in the manual refers to the length of time and speed that you must travel for the car to "reset" once the problem is corrected, and button has been reset. No further procedures are listed.

what year vibe do you have?the 03-06 have an indirect tpms, it's controled by the rotation of the axlewhile the 08-10 have a direct tpms, it has sensors in the wheelsdepending if you have an 08-10 it's possible if the nail went threw the tire and hit the sensor IF the puncture was near the valve stemWas the tire removed from the rim for the fix? if so they could have damaged the sensor during that process.you can drive the car with out causing damage to the system, just check your tire pressure often till you get the problem sorted out.
