09 Vibe - Disable TPMS

Post by sstress »

I just moved back to VT from CO (hurray!). Before I moved I sold my 05 Vibe.A few weeks ago I ran into a hyper clean black on black 09 Vibe. After a quick test drive I bought it. Its a base model with the 2.4/5 speed auto, sunroof, monsoon system, etc. I like it. It has every option ou can think of... cept it has the steelies on it. Very odd.So naturally I had to buy some new summer wheels. As I shopped Tire Rack I discovered the cost of the TPMS sensors and the additional cost evertime I wanted to swap out my stock rims with snow tires. What a rediculous system. After some research, it appears that I can rewire it so that the system is tricked into thinking that the sensors are still installed and the light never goes on (similar to O2 sims). Before I begin testing wires and diagnosing the connections, I'd love to hear if anyone else has done this and if you would share your experience. It would really save me some time Also, I don't want to place a piece of tape over the light, and keep in mind that the bulb in the dash is an LED and cannot simply be pulled from the dash board. Thanks so much!PS: I just purchased a set of 17x7 Kosei K1 TS's in LT GREY wrapped with General Altimax HP tires.... I did not order it with the sensors. I'm totally committed to kill TPMS.

I saw the link you posted earlier, and it made sense - if you dug deeply. I had posted in one message there:"I'm contemplating doing this "mod" for the tire pressure module as well for winter (when I don't have rims with TPS sensors). From what I figure, that should eliminate the low tire light from irritating me daily. It would be again a dark blue wire, at pin 7 of the tire pressure module. If I get adventurous one day and try this, I'll post a separate "how to"."That was the extent of it though. I think the TPS unit is behind the HVAC controls somewhere - I haven't gone searching yet - but I'm sure the manual showed it there. If anyone else has any input, feel free to add. I can foresee me buying another rocker switch in the near future though... as clearly this theory needs to be tested.

Tirerack is quick! New wheels/tires installed. New weight is 32.1 lbs. Old wheel/tire weight approx 42 lbs. I dig it.Now, time to kill an expensive and annoying technology... tpms. BTW, tirerack says VT will fail yer vehicle inspection if the light is on. They also say that there is no law against an owner disabling the system. Its a federal requirement for manufacturers to install, but not for the owner to keep. The most annoying thing about it.... everyone is so afraid of lawsuits, no will post anything on its function. Sigh. The spirit of DIY hot rodding is dead.On a lighter note, I'll post some pics asap. Good to be back in the genvibe saddle again. Hope everyone is well.

Sad state of affairs man... pic attached!!Its a far cry from my '05's mods, but its just a beginning. And I don't plan on punching a hole in my dash to mount an lcd this time.

I'm not totally sure on it's funciton but off the top of my head you could: Clip the wire that lights up the warning lamp. Remove the receiver. Welcome back to GenVibe!!!

And I agree with you, that back piece makes all the difference. As it turns out, with all of the rain we have in NE, I really enjoy staying dry with the windows cracked. Side note - I didnt know it when I bought it, but the previous owner also installed a really nice security system with remote start. Will come in handy this winter. My wife discovered the remote start when my 2 year old was playing with the keys... "vroom". Bonus!
