How can you tuurn off the passenger side airbag?

Post by ITSRVIBE »

Hey guys, I was just wondering if there was any way to turn off the passenger side air bag in the 2010 Vibe?I'm assuming if there is a way it'd be similar to that of the 2009.

Turn off as in a switch for your convenience?.. There isn't one.. Now.. I guess you could disable them.. but not just one.. it would have to be both.. Now, there is the sensor in the passenger seat.. as long as its under a certain weight.. it will stay off..

Why do you want to turn it off?It should turn off automatically if no one is sitting there (or if you have something light, like a purse/backpack/etc), and if someone IS sitting there, don't you want it on?There is a light on the center console under the vent which tells you whether it is on or not, it is in that square-looking box there.

IF you want to turn it off I'd pick up a replacement seat sensor and plug it in. Just leave it on the floor under the passenger seat, It would be weight free, you haven't compromised the SRS system. It is easy to hook back up in a matter of a minute or two when someone is riding in the seat. Sadly they didn't install an off on switch in the system. If you had a wiring diagram, some skill to wire in an off on switch and the ability to accept the death of your passenger if it malfunctions as YOUR responsibility, go to it.Dave

I've had about 20lbs in the passenger seat and the seatbelt light as stayed off, not sure how much more would be needed to make it beep. I notice it takes about 5lbs in the right spot to get the off light to illuminate.

But in the event of a crash if the front passenger airbag was to go off, like i said we have heard it could cause more damage then not having it go off.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of disabling the whole airbag, she could always ride in the backseat for a while...

I'd highly suggest doing your own research rather than relying on hearsay from friends & family. There's no definitive answers, but from looking this topic up for some friends a few months back, the same results kept jumping back at me: when using seatbelts and airbags appropriately, injury is reduced to occupants, including unborn ones.Volvo is the only manufacturer I know of who has tested with a crash dummy that is a facsimile of a pregnant occupant. If you can find their results, it may give some insight to the issue.Whatever you do, please research it. Don't rely on second and third hand "knowledge" when it comes to your baby's safety.

Don't rely on second and third hand "knowledge" when it comes to your baby's safety.Look in your owners manual, page 1 -26, Your question is answered there for seat belts.Personally, I'd keep the air bags for they don't so much as mash you back in the seat as they do prevent your body contorting and mashing into the dash. The injuries from a seat belt without an airbag can be severe. With an airbag you don't hurdle forward as you do without an airbag keeping you planted in your seat!Me? I for sure would keep the air bag operational. Just from a common sense approach to the whole impact scenario. You can't fear life and it's consequences or else you'd simply sit fearfully in your living room worrying about things that probably won't happen. Go out and enjoy life and the best it has to offer you in any situation.DaveDave

If you look in the owners manual, it will show you the proper way for her to position the seat belt. It is around the very beginning of the manual. As long as she is belted it.. it should keep her away, or at least she would just brush against the airbag.. Keep the seat scooted all the way back too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq9lvxQRFqQ

Email her the links provided here to reduce her anxiety and stress. That is not good for her or the little one. If she is as ease, then the baby will also.
