I'm back after about a year and wanted to get some thoughts on an issue I've been dealing with recently. Starting last summer, there have been a few occasions where it would not start in hot, sunny weather. Only after a couple of minutes of cranking (10-15 sec at a time) would it start and the CEL light would be on (though it would clear after a few start/stop cycles). I went to the dealer last week to get my A/C recharged and mentioned this issue as well. They checked the codes and got something about crankshaft position which didn't make any sense to me. They ended up replacing the PCM under warranty and waived the $102 diagnostic fee because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. I was happy that the PCM was still under warranty - I thought I didn't have any warranty coverage left since the car has 81K miles and the 5 yr/100K CUV warranty expired in February. So far, I have not had any starting problems since the PCM was replaced. Has anyone else had this issue?
I had a similar issue but mine threw a cam position sensor failure code. After that, all hell broke loose. Thermostat went outHead Gasket crackedBlock crackedCam Position Sensor still needed replacingRadiator cracked2 Spark plugs seized2 Piston seal were worn to almost not existenceand I think that's it, but all that led to my completely free 2zz swap with only 30k on it when I bought the car for only $5000 with over 140k on the stock 1zz. Also my car was not under warranty, I don't know anyone from the back road dealership I got it from, they just threw me a huge bone and saved me a few grand, but enough with that story. If you have a sluggish start which I had after my 2zz swap, I simply replaced the battery and wah-lah.
