Netbook runs like crap.

Post by 808 Vibes »

My Acer Aspire One started running like crap after I downloaded the full Yahoo Messenger, and that gave me problems, so I deleted it. Now the memory is so low it can't even do updates on the virus software, and sometimes when I turn it on, ALL my settings, my screensaver, everything is gone. It won't even let me do a system restore due to low memory. I went through and deleted programs I don't use to save what's left of the memory. It's still very slow (and yes, I have all my files on a thumb drive)I don't want to, and can't buy a new computer. I'm happy with it and it's all I need right now. Would a defrag help much or should I get a 1.5 card?

You did go to control panel and uninstall it right? You may want to try disk cleanup, and then go ahead and do defrag and see if it'll help..

When you're in the indtall/uninstall programs it'll populate a list of all your programs and software that you have on the computer (widows messenger, skype, avg, games, yadda yadda...). I go into mine every now and then and uninstall the useless programs that sometimes get added...

There are also a lot of hidden temporary files all over the place that can be huge (such as when you open a PDF in a browser window, it downloads a copy of it) and whatnot. But I will defer to the computer experts around here (Tim???? )

Yep, I deleted it the right way, from the populated control panel list.

Go to Start|Run and enter "msconfig" without the quotes. Go to the startup tab and see what things are automatically starting when you boot up. Unclick anything you don't need. You can google each to see what it is. You're not deleting anything, so if you need to put something back you just check the box again.how much free space on the hard disk? Delete all your temporary internet files from within your browser. Are you running anti-spyware? Run a scan.

I finally retired my Dell Inspirion e1505. It just got too hassled to keep up with. Internet would close randomly on it's own. Norton made it slow as heck. It took forever to startup and shutdown. The battery was shot, would only run connected to power. The plug was all worn and a fire hazard. Still on Windows XP with no Office. So since I am going back to school and need it for my job at home some days I upgraded to the HP Notebook. 4gig RAM, 320 gig hard drive, 17.3 HD screen. Man I love this thing, and Windows 7 is the bomb. I paid $550 for this unit at PC Richard and Sons. I love that store! This laptop retails for $899.

now that you have some free space, download and run this:http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleanerCCleaner will find all the stuff on your computer and your registry that you no longer need. It keeps my 5 yr old Compaq running like a champ.

Actually, for some reason the box popped up again ("not enough free space...") so I checked and it now says:"Free Space 0 bytes"

whats your page file set to? you can increase its size and see if you can run system restore.right-click My Computer -> Properties Advanced Tab -> Performance box -> Settings... button-> Advanced Tab -> Virtual Memory box -> Change button. Lets you manually set the size of the file. set it to 1536 - 3072 (1.5-3.0 gig) If you have the hard drive space. Sometimes the system will make the file retardedly small like 200-400 meg.

The biggest problem seems to me that you only have an 8Gb SSD(?) as storage.

Go to Ecost.com and get a refurbed external usb drive. About 1/2 the price of new ones in the stores. Also, most netbooks start out in life as mainly an internet I/O device. Weren't designed to replace laptops/desktops.Kinda like the Yugo. Was very cheap to buy but was expensive to repair and had lousy gas mileage. My 5 cents worth.(I'm older so I'm worth more.)

None. Vibe is gone.

Let's see if I can type this and hit "Post" without it booting me off again. It had been giving me problems again (that whole "0" thing again, still crashing and the browser closes on me. So I had a free assessment from a professional geek, who says its hard drive is failing. If I were to fix it, it would be $125 for the repair + part ($100-$200) and I only paid $220 for it new. So, it's (barely) living on borrowed time. It served it's purpose; I sold my few-months-old Acer Extensa because it gave me shoulder pain when I carried it to work every day, so got this one which didn't give me pain.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!! After much debating, comparing, and looking into "Internal" hard drive, which was $50 for the thing itself, and no guarantee that if I paid to have it installed would solve the problem, I got a new HP Mini. It's kinda fugly and NOT Neptune blue, *sniff* but oh well. I'm sorry if anyone sent me anything; I signed on and never got anything, so I have to figure out how to set it so that popups (I.M.'s) are allowed for this site It was a choice between another Acer, an Asus and this one and my tech-geeky friend said to get this one because it would be easier for him to work on, add more memory, etc. :D The Acer Aspire One will probably be salvaged for it's body parts. It's G-R-E-A-T to be back! I've been so bored, I've knitted 3 dog sweaters since sunday. Oh yeah, thanks to me mudder, who has extra cash because... FROSTY's PAID OFF.....18 payments early! wheeee!
