I have the General Altimax HP. I've had them on for about 10,000 miles and they have been almost perfect. Go to TireRack.com and look at the reviews there.

I just did a big search on tires for my Civic. The Altimax HP looks like a great tire. In 195/60R15 it was only $62/tire - IF you buy online. If you show up at Sears, the charge is much more. I haven't worked all the way thru it but apparently you buy it online and then go to the local Sears for install. I guess you get the discount because you are bypassing a paid employee? On almost every tire I checked, Sears was cheaper (online) than Discount Tire/America's Tire.Anyway, the HP has a treadwear rating of 440 and the traction/heat ratings are AA.Another good tire I'm looking at is the Firestone Firehawk GT, with 460AA rating and it costs just $2 more a tire in the above size.I've had great experiences with Kumho and Hankook for tires. I'd check out their prices and ratings too.

The prices at tiresavings.com are almost exactly the same as Sears online, BTW.

I just posted this same thing on another thread - so don't get confused! I need to get new tires for my Civic and it appears the best prices are either at America's Tire or Sears - as long as you go online. At Sears the minute you talk to someone at the store or on their 800 number the price per tire jumps up a crazy amount. So, if you try to order online you find that you can't order that tire that is on the frickin' website. There's nothing to "click" on and the picture of the tire you want just sits there staring you in the face (and laughing under its breath, I suspect). So, I go to a different tire, one that says it is available for local pick up. You click on that tire but then none of the local stores has it in stock and again there is nothing to "click" on to order it or get it shipped - it just says it isn't available. So, I go to America's tire online and click on the "found it cheaper" button. They guy calls me up and says we can definitely match that price for tire ($66.50 at Sears for the Potenza G016 "Grid" tire - where America's Tire has it for $77 or something) but then they apparently throw out their normal $15/tire mount and balance and the $2/tire disposal fee and they say that Sears charges thus and so for mount/balance/disposal/etc. so they knock just a measly $10 bucks off the online price for a set of four out the door. What a joke.I checked out TireRack.com and TireSavings.com but they charge shipping of $60 and $90 respectively so there go any savings out the window. If I can't get a better deal anywhere I'm going to try and call America's Tire back and see if they'll come down another $20-23 to approximate their on-line cost for the labor, etc. plus the match on the Sears tires.

Just my real-world example from today.Talked to a friend who works at Sears - best he could do was a Bridgestone HP 550 for $370 out the door. This is a Sears only tire so I have no idea what it compares to. America's Tire would only match the price of the tire, but then they raised their other costs so their cost for the Potenza G1019 Grid was $359. That is only $10 off their internet price. I tried to get them to come down and the best they would do was $350.I checked into some other options and nothing was panning out so I literally had America's Tire on the second ring of the phone when I decided I'd try Firestone directly and see if they wanted to better the price.Firestone not only bettered it, they blew the heck out of it. Got four of the Potenza G019's in 195/60R15 out the door for $294.64!

Quote, originally posted by woodyg »I went to sears and they quoted me $630 for bridgstone hp 55?. Yeah, that's the HP 550. My price checking shows that tire costs vary pretty wildly. Obviously, your tire size is different but for that tire in the 195/50R15 it was $370 from Sears.A Kumho Ecsta ASX in 205/50R15 at America's Tire is $91, but in 205/60R15 at Sears it is $65.Research and calling around and negotiating is the only way to get the best deal. As I said elsewhere, buying tires shouldn't be this hard!
