Saving a Shepherd

Driving down to Kentucky this weekend to pick up this Shepherd. The owner absolutely does not want it. A friend of a friend who lives there is arranging all the details for us to pick her up. She was being kept in a crate on a farm, we saw her pictures and decided we had to get her. Currently her name is 'Valerie' but that wont last. We are kicking around names. Six hours for a dog, I guess I am crazy, but in a good way.

She is 9 months old, and I think it is going to be fun.

Headed down in the morning, we are starting to kick names around. We have two cats Jimmy, and Hendrix. We are looking for a name that will fit in with the theme. We have a few, we are always open to suggestions, anyone?

Know the "had to get her" feeling. Went into a pet store a couple of years ago to get some dog food. There was an adoption day going on in the middle of the store. Last thing I was looking for was another dog. Then Quincy popped his cocker spaniel head out of a crate. Quincy was rescued from death row in L.A., brought up here to the Bay Area, and put into foster care. Skinny, cut up, beat up, covered in mange. Walked over to me with a wag in his long uncut tail, and endless forgiveness in his eyes. I said "that's my dog". I never even got the dog food.

Awesome! We had the same situation happen when we adopted Jimmy, he was there yelling "take me home" and we did.

We are back with the shepherd. We named her Page, after Jimmy Page. We tried to keep with the theme, as the cats are Jimmy and Hendrix. She did really well on the drive back from Kentucky. Now she is settling in here, slowly.Sleeping on the long ride

I like the name Page. I was thinking Alice, for Alice Cooper, but Page is better. Good luck with your new friend. Shepherds are very loyal.

congrats on the new pupwhen i do transports my average is a 3-5hour trip... and it's not even for me LOLI'm happy to see Page is doing well.Don't forget to visit your vet to get her checked out, and also to get her chipped so if she desides to roam you have a better chance at getting her back.

I left for work before she got home.Page is already chipped, that's the one and only good thing the JA that originally owned her did. We just have to see about changing the chip information. The guy who was the go between, who is an awesome person, got us information on that. It's just a matter of getting everything squared away.

thats good to hear that at least she's chipped.The only other thing I would do is check with your homeowners insurance. Some companys require added insurance or may not cover you anymore for owners of "high risk" dogs such as pits, rotties, and shepards.

If you find yourself in the "black listing" for your new pup with your current homeowners company. When you start searching for a new company. Don't be shocked if they ask if your new girl has been "protection trained" If you find yourself in the situation that you need to answer yes to this question you will surely be denied. If you lie and say no, you have just commited ins fraud. My homeowner's insurance is with Farm Bureau of North Carolina. They deal with a lot of rural homes and are very tolerant of all breeds of dog, as well as livestock and other aspect of country living.
