Anyone have experience with spray painting a car? DIY style..

Here's the deal:I have this car:With rot on the corners of a couple of the doors:Then I have this parts car:with decent (big) doors to swap onto the silver car. So my dilemma is that the silver car is a low-mileage, unmolested car and I hate to mess it up. However, it's got lousy paint (especially on the roof where it's faded to almost white in spots). Little scratches everywhere. I ultimately want to throw down for a really nice paint job, probably an early '85 VW gold tone.But its not really in the cards at the moment or anytime soon. In the meantime, I want to fix my rust and I don't want to drive around in a two-tone silver and gold car. Rattlecanning it seems like a decent in-between step, maybe, and I've seen it done well. I was thinking gold::D .. I've searched, seen well-done jobs and lousy jobs and everything in between. Does anyone have any personal experience with this? Tips, tricks, things to do and not to do, etc. I'm all ears

A freind of mine told me he spray painted his car.....with wet sanding in between coats. Said it came out great. If you have a indoor place to spray....I say go for it. Its tough to spray paint in the wind lol. Remember always use multiple thin coats ! If you are in doubt find a small spot on the car & give it a test. Keep us posted if you do try it.

I'm a little hazy on actual wet sanding technique, however, although I think I get the general concept. If I do this, I'm going to test-spray one of the donor doors first to practice. All of the doors, fenders, hood, lower front valance, maybe even the hatch will be sprayed off of the car so I can get all of the nooks and crannies.
