Moving into a new place with friends

Post by Kevzaz »

Its coming close to the move in date to this townhouse that my friends and I are moving into. It's getting rather nerve-wracking, not knowing what to expect. What are some cool things to buy for the house?

I had drills, PS3, camera, and bike stolen out of my room till I got a deadbolt, but by that time, they decided to up an leave me. Since I was the only one on the lease, I got stuck with paying all the utilities and 2 additional months of lease till it finally got rented and I was taken out of the lease. Believe as good as your friendships are, it doesn't hurt to have this backed up. All this that happened to me, well they weren't friends, they were FAMILY!!!!!

yea get a deadbolt to replace the doorknob. I don't care if your roomate is your best friend. If he brings in any friends...beware b/c they are the ones that will end up screwing you over.and yea..like everyone else said, if you are the one on the lease u'll probably get screwed on utilities, rent over time, make sure you can cover the cost if that happens (plan ahead) or just sign a joint least.I had to sue someone last time I rented..mainly b/c they didn't return my security deposit. IT was a waste of time & money and a pain in my ***. I bought my own house though so now i don't have to worry about that stuff anymore.

fair warning.. living with friends is different than hanging out with friends. Not always a bad thing, but it can be.. awkward.Work out a good communal system for certain things so as to avoid arguments about who uses more toilet paper, etc.

I suggest the first thing you buy is... your own place. I lived with my best friend and a few other guys, needless to say, we're not friends anymore. You find out how immature and irresponsible people are when you live with them. You give them money for bills taht they never pay, and then they spend it on other stuff, never do the dishes, leave trash and food on the floor. It gets bad.

Since its a pain to quote all the messages;I was planning on getting a lock for my door just because I plan on having a lot of parties and it will be easier than worrying. Not sure who's name is on the lease. We were looking for TV's but they are pretty expensive. hahaAnd as far as the roommates, they are good guys that lived across the all from me last year. I know everything changes when you live with someone, but its an experience.

The best thing to have... An Exit Plan!!!If You're the one who's signing for the place:If possible, don't sign a lease. Pay month to month as long as possibe and be able to cover all of it yourself if necessary. Be able and WILLING to kick those who stiff you on rent and bills out on the street!!! Let them welch once and they'll try to walk all over you!!!If you're the roommate:What are you going to do if it all goes bad and where would you go? Good luck!!!

In college, I shared an apartment with three friends (four bedroom). All four of us had our names on the lease. One of us collected money from the others for rent and bills. We had our own "cubbys" for food and labeled everything that we didn't want eaten. There were two bathrooms so I only had to split those costs with one other person. It actually worked out logistically very well... lots of personal disputes, and was glad to move out just because I don't keep the same schedule as most other people (I had a whooooooole lot more work than they did, and their late nights and fun and partying got on my nerves by the end) but the general stuff can work fine.

ANother thing just popped into mind. If you are paying a general person and they are paying all of the the bills, buy a receipt book and make him fill out a reciept everytime you give him ANY kind of bill money. It may seem pety, but it could def help you out if things fall through.

My first place was where I moved in with a guy I worked with who was 34, I was 22. Finding a roommate that's way past all the frat boy partying BS worked out swell. No parties, bills were paid on time consistently, and nobody's stuff was stolen.
