Daytime running lights on all the time?

Post by nittanydoug »

I have a 2005. Should my DRL's be on whenever the car is running? Even when not in gear? I went to a drive-in over the weekend and I had to have the windows open and car off (no a/c and it was humid) so I didn't have my headlights on.

Yes. The DRLs will be on whenever the car is running, whether it's in gear or not. If you're parked (like at the Drive-In), you could engage the e-brake and that will turn the DRLs off even though the car is running.

That makes sense. The thought never crossed my mind to pull the e-brake. I swear my wife's saturn vue the drl's aren't on when it's in park. Then again I don't know that I pay that much attention.

They very well could stay off until the Vue is put in gear. Every car is different I suppose. But yes, for your Vibe, just engage the e-brake. I remember when I did my first oil change on my '09. I had the e-brake engaged since the car was up on the ramps. When I started it to back it off the ramps I thought something was wrong because the DRLs weren't on. Then I realized it was because the e-brake was engaged . I eventually ended up just disabling the DRLs/AHLs on my '09 so now I have full control over all the lights all the time which is the greatest thing ever. That could be another possible solution for you as well, if you're so inclined. It's very easy to do.

Actually, the e-brake has to be engaged with the ignition completely off. Then you can start/run the car and the lights remain off until the e-brake is released. The '05 manual is here --> http://www.genvibe.com/images/...e.pdfThis thread I just posted details the '03 (and up) DRL operation --> http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=42131

I didnt' try that. I did notice that they didn't go off when I pulled the e-brake in the parking lot at lunch. That's the hazard of buying a used car with no owner's manual.

HELP! I'm going to the drive-in theater tonight and I can't get my 2009 Vibe to start without the DRL coming on. Even with the parking break applied, the DRL still comes on?!?

You're having the AHL's come on when it's dark - which can't be manually over-ridden on a '09 without modification.I'm sure there's info on this in the How-to section, as I did this on my '09 last year. I added a switch so that I can retain "normal" automatic operation most of the time, but switch it back to full manual when I want.If you aren't worried about DRL's working, and don't care for the AHL's either, then you could just snip one wire to disable both.Unfortunately this response is a little late to help with the drive-in situation tonight though...John

Thanks John, I ended up snipping the wire to disable both but I plan on adding an on/off switch in the near future.
