Modifying Side Grille Pieces

Post by Wolfman213 »

I finally got around to ordering the grille pieces that everyone tends to lose. I already intend on painting them black, but I'm thinking about cutting them up some and curious what other GVC members think.I'm planning on either removing all the material between the slats or remove sections. Another thought that just crossed my head, but will probably leave off the poll is to drill holes to flush mount an array of LEDs too... hmm...

Do you have fogs? If there's a way to wire the LEDs you're proposing WITH the fogs, that would be killer. But then... would they be competing with one another when turned on? The LEDs would look brilliant, whereas the fogs would be a more mellow glow. Or, maybe you don't have fogs at all!

They have a LED in them that I have wired to the same switch as the halo's. I totally didn't think about wiring thiem up like that though. hmm... now that's def got me thinking!!!

If you're adding LEDs so close to existing ones (and the halos are around the fog LEDs, right?), go for it! I have very little experience with LEDs... if that many are clustered together, will you be able to pick them out individually? This whole project has me thinking of the 2008+ Audi headlights:

There is one very bright individual LED in the fog light housing. The halo's are around the projector's, check the sig to get an idea. I've got the Audi look on the ex-gf's old car and it looked awesome. I consider that with the grille pieces, I'll probably have to order some more so I can fab them up just how i want it and take my time with it.

Great idea! I have thought of doing this but I'm afraid that I will screw it up. I want to see how you do this and maybe I will do the same.

OK guys.. I was,mt going to jump into this one just yet BUT my next mod is pretty much what you're talking about here I'll be using 10mm 15000 mcd (can you say BRIGHT) clear WHITE LED's rated @ 4.2 volts. I will likely be using 9 or 12 (multiples of 3) and it will very much resemble the "Audi" look I'm not quit going to have it done in time for the Indy meet (A/C calls have been kicking mu but ) but I will bring what I have started so you can get the idea.

I voted for "stock" because I would not cut them. But...I totally agree on LEDs. I was already going for fog lights on my 2009 base when I thought that if I wasn't doing that, I'd want to have a course of LEDs below each rib.

When I created my high mount 3rd brake light, I got the red 3mm LED's from SuperBrightLED. The 10mm white LED's that I will be using to modify the front vents on the GT bumper came from MPJA.com I won't have time to get back to LED mods till late October, then LOOK OUT

I had seen the Audi's lights last year and wanted to do this. I bought the LED bar fog lights to put in between the slats (cut out) but the ones I got were a tad too big so I never got around to doing it. Still want to. Two bars per side was the plan. How much were the fog light inserts? I never got around to checking. I'd love to see this done!!

I'm def going to do the LEDs now since I'm having probs with the LED in the fog housing. Hopefully I'll be able to get some extra money soon and be able to get it done before it gets too cold out.

Sucks that your led setup in the fogs wasn't workin. Can't wait to see what you do with yours. It gonna be blue?

They don't like to share.Blue front facing lights, of any kind, are illegal in this country in all the places I know of. Even those LED washer jets that came out a few yrs ago? I know several that had/tried them (in blue) and most were told to disconnect or remove them. You may get away with it for a while, until you run into a bored cop or one that just had a fight w/his/her significant other, but you will surly be pulled over for it sooner or later.I'd say you're taking your chances with the headlamp setup you are running now. Personally, I don't care and think it looks good, but be forewarned that you may be legally required to de-mod at some point.White is much safer and offers a bit of extra light too. Here are mine. Even though they are white, they do take on a slight blue hue, but never been pulled over for them.... going on 3yrs now.I wired them so if the key is on, they are on. But I also tapped into the unused automatic headlight circuit, so they stay on for about a minute after the key is off.

Welcome to Indiana where you can ride with you blue lights on without a care. The state statutes does not say anything about having forward facing blue lights being illegal. I have passed and drove behind cops with my halos on plenty of times. Our statutes state that you cannot have a red, red & blue combination, & some other combination of forward facing front lights. The only way my forward facing blue lights would be illegal is if they are flashing. All exterior and interior lighting mods that I have are still wired independantly, but I still have no worries about driving with the blue.If they ever change the statutes, that will be a different story, but for now, it's not a worry in Indiana at least.

That's certainly a plus for you, and the first state I am aware of that has such lenient laws on the subject too. If the cops and other emergency vehicles had only stuck with the red......?In that case, my former post is moot. Have at it then!! I say... LEDS!!

I wouldn't say it's a moot point. Your post is a very valid post regardless of the state. People just need to check the laws prior to doing anything. I would hope that even members from Indiana would still do the research on their own to verify what I'm saying and not just take my word. I think it is good that you posted that message anyways for those that have never really thought of the legality issue.
