what to do - 100,000 mile / 5 year maintenance?

Post by knaffie »

My Vibe is fast approaching 100,000 miles. I haven't had to do a thing to it except change the oil, change the tires, and change the windshield wipers.Do I need to be considering some tune-up items - plugs, wires, fuel filter, coolant flush, etc.? I don't have a manual to look at, so I don't have a way to look this info up.bThanks for any help!

I will also absolutely recommend new tranny fluid. Despite driving well enough, I am willing to bet your fluid is darker than dark by now. You can check it in the engine bay. Your oil dipstick has the yellow ring to grab, whereas your tranny fluid dipstick is smaller, less noticeable, and has a locking mechanism. It's located just to the right of center in the engine bay, straight down in front of you when you have the hood up. Pull back the locking latch and check that fluid. If it's super dark on the stick and smells "burnt" (especially after a drive), get it changed at a Toyota dealer (highly recommended) or a very reputable oil change place. It should be a deep cherry red and not have much of a smell at all. This, in addition to the oil changes you've been getting will keep you on the road for many more miles.Plugs at this point are recommended, with NGK Iridiums being the preferred brand/type it seems. As far as a coolant flush, the pink stuff sold at your local Toyota dealer is recommended over anything at a GM dealer. You want the stuff Toyota intended for the Matrix to be the fluids used in your Vibe. If you go to the Toyota dealer for the tranny fluid, have them flush and fill your coolant. Two birds with one stone, and hopefully another 100k miles as a result!

Mine is a manual trans. I'll have to look into the changed interval on that.

In that case, maybe someone should check on your clutch soon, too. Never hurts to look into these things at nearly 100k. Glad you're enjoying the Vibe as much as you are!

You're due for that , too. It's very simple. There's a post in here on how to do all that good stuff yourself. I just recently did my plugs, coolant, and man-trans fluid. So simple a K-NINE can do it.

The list...Check again the normal things you've done (oil, air and cabin air filters, wipers, tires, brakes).Other less frequent items:Coolant flush (type doesn't matter much as long as you do a full flush)Tranny flush (not sure on the recommendation for a manual for frequency or type)Power steering flush (make sure to use Dex III ATF)Brake fluid flush/bleed if you don't do it with new pads (I assume you've had to replace the front pads at least once by 100k)Spark plugs (I put in the 4 pronged Bosch Iridiums that don't need to be gapped)Serpentine belt (replace if original, if not the original just check it to make sure it is in good shape still)Check the AC system for functionality, and if not operating right for leaksNew battery if over 5 years oldAt 100k you'd be wise to put new struts on all aroundNext brake job replace the calipers and rotors and not just the padsMuch of the above you can do yourself. The Vibe is relatively friendly for do-it-yourselfers. Most of the fluid flushes you'll need to take in because of the needed machines. You can do coolant and brake fluid yourself, and a pan drain for the transmission (but that gets only half the fluid).
