Your past cars

Post by 1SC »

I've looked, but didn't find a thread like this one on here. It's always fun to know what cars people had prior to their Vibe. You can even include a little comment or story for each of them.1) 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier Z22 dark purple (2001-2002)No pics... Though it was my first car, I hated it !2) 1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2,3L dark green (2002-2005)Bought it with only 39600 km in April 2002. Blew the headgasket at about 50 000 km in early 2004. Traded it in in March 2005 with a blew headgasket again. Apparently, those 2,3L Quad4 were kown for this problem. It was still in mint condition, but didn't feel like spending another 1000$ in a 11 years old car. This is a picture from August 20043) 2005 Pontiac Pursuit SE 2,2L Ecotec black (2005-2009)Though it was a lease, it was my favorite car of all (shut... more than the Vibe...) It was a 4 years lease with 80 000 km allowed (lease on March 31st 2005). I returned the car on March 13, 2009 with 79975 km on the clock. If the buy back was not higher that what the car was forth at this time, I would still have it.Picture from summer 20084) Pontiac Vibe SE 2,4L 2009Special ordered in november 2008. I wanted to make sure that I could get the Vibe I wanted when I had to return the Pursuit at the end of the lease. Don't get me wrong, I like my Vibe, but it's not the same relation I had with the Pursuit. Though the Vibe is a lot more reliable than the Pursuit was. It now has close to 27 000 km and never went to the dealer, except for the maintenance.First day at home in March 2009Now :

The Vibe is only my second car I've ever had, but the first was a 2000 Ford Mustang base; white exterior, tan interior. We bought it when I was 15 at a salvage yard. But I loved it. When we bought it I had around 42K miles on it.. and when I sold it last July it had around 120K miles on it. I really enjoyed it.. but wanted more space for college.. then we bought me the 2009 Vibe GT.

All Pontiacs...the first was my beloved '88 Quad 4 Grand Am, 4 door, white with Sapphire interior...the one who started it all...how I miss her. She needed thousands in work done-head gasket, trans work. She still had many of her original parts including rack and pinion. She took good care of me, as did our 89 Bonny; we donated both to charity, leaving them at an auto auction yard...oh man did that break our hearts. Looking back now, we should have spent the thousands to fix them instead of the two leaking used cars we got to replace them. 'scuse me while I have a good cry now...

Ah, the Dodge Shadow....I have lots of memories riding around in one of those when I was in high school. A friend of mine had one. Unfortunately, it caught on fire one day with three people in it, so that was the end of that car (no one was hurt).Anyway, here's my short list of cars:1990 Dodge Spirit (1996-2000) My first car. Hit a deer with it early one morning and messed the car up pretty bad (as well as the deer), but I was ok.2000 Pontiac Sunfire SE Coupe (2000-2009) Have tons of awesome memories of this car. Loved it and still miss it. Fun to drive and fun to mod. Zero problems with it until summer '09 when the A/C quit working. Got that fixed, sold it, and bought the Vibe.2009 Pontiac Vibe GT (2009-?) It's been almost a year since I've had the Vibe and I'm loving it!

WOW!! A lot of response to this thread. Imagine that, a car forum where people like to talk about their cars. OK, from the beginning (isn't that a song title?)Pennsylvania:1957 Chevy 210 2-dr sedan, 327 ci/300hp/4bbl, 3-sp w/Hurst, 4:11 gears. Loved the car but it passed everything but the gas station. (T-boned)1960 Corvair 4-dr Smoke Bomb. (A $75 junker to replace the Chevy, and the only "automatic" I have ever owned.) I'm glad I'm not the only previous Corvair owner here.1967 Opel Kadette Rallye.1965 Volvo 1800S, like the Saint drove only black/red.1968 Datsun 520 Pickup. 1300cc!! lol!! My only pickup ever.1976 VW Rabbit Special "golf" Edition. Orange/black with knee bar and passive restraints.1969 Datsun 510. 1600cc (moving up!!)1963 MGB, restored myself. Beautiful, early BRG w/steel wheels and stock "moon" caps. Wires are for show. Steels were for go (and stealth too.)1970 MGB, I should've kept the '63. Again, "restored" myself.A slew of other Volvo P1800's and 1800S's. (2 or 3. I don't remember as some ended up as donor cars.)1967 Volvo 144S. Looked like junk, w/faded original green paint and one white fender, but ran...... Highly modified B20B, w/dual Weber's and a hot, HOT cam. Tranny w/electric OD unit, shifter and tunnel from an 1800 series car. Lowered 2" all around. Custom adjustable tie rods, remounted (lowered) pitman/idler arms and adjustable Panhard rod, with F/R sway bars added, as were several sets of street/rally lights, all legal... sort of. All that made it a terrible winter car, but in the dry/wet it was a terror and surprised many who tried.1972 VW Type II Bus. 1.7L DOG!!! I shoulda' kept the Volvo, but figured I needed to own ONE Bus in my lifetime.1982 Nissan Stanza. Another troubled dog. I shoulda' kept the Volvo.Ah, my very favorite all-time ride is next. Believe it or not: A 1980 Honda Civic DL, 1500 CVCC. "Inga." I modified this car mostly from a junkyard. Raced it, Rallyed it, Auto-Xed it, beat the sh*t out of it, drove it every day for years and it came back for more. The worse I treated it, the better it ran... It literally rusted out from under me in from Pennsylvania winter road salt or I might still own it. Sold it for $100 in 1995 and it didn't even owe me that. My fondest automotive ownership. Details upon request. 1992 VW Golf. 2-Dr. Didn't do anything exceptionally well, but had a sunroof that I even kept open fully in the winter.Texas:1992 Plymouth Colt Vista AWD wagon... or hatchback if you prefer. Our wedding carriage. My current ride: 2004 Mazda3 Hatchback. "Virgin1," my very first new car after 30 years of driving. My wife's current ride: 2006 Pontiac Vibe base. "Frosty Jake," as seen in these pages and modified by me, as she will let me.

Think of it this way, the '63 Chevy II is a car I have always wanted. You moved up from the Mustang II to an original. The 316's, while not awe inspiring in power, were basically good and good handling cars, and is afterall a BMW.After that, you do have what I would consider to be a couple of losers. But then if you look at my list, so do I!

1969 Plymouth Valiant (with the greatest engine ever built; slant 6)1976 Dodge Aspen (Mtr Trend car of the year, and in a reversal, lemon of the year)1984 Renault Encore (cleanest running engine in history, with the deadliest brakes)1986 Nissan Hardbody (bullet proof vehicle)1989 Toyota Corolla wagon (finally, a car that lasted 13 years)1996 Mazda 626 (A Ford Probe p.o.c.)2003 Pontiac Vibe AWD (very close to being the first AWD off the assembly line)2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx (Suspension built by monkeys; GM does its best to end my life with more monkeys leaving bolts out of an axle repair)2009 Pontiac Vibe (30 mpg and lifetime XM)2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring (S.Korea won't catch Japan in the near future because they've already passed them especially in the family car category)Lessons learned: 1. I will never own an American car again2. I will never own a European car again3. Japan has a lot of improvements to make if I am to look their way again4. I have owned:An Isuzu I-Mark Diesel (I was getting 40+ mpg and 0-60 in about 15 sec)A Ford Escort (almost had it long enough for Antique Plates in NY, which would have looked great on this car, but it finally died out)An Olds Bravada (the only non-small car)A Saab 9-2x (still have)A Pontiac VibeHmmm, four of the five makers are RIP (and one was on life support). Perhaps I should buy a Toyota and see if my kiss of death really exists...

Eh, wasn't going to try this, might make the brain juices go to boil... but here goes...1) learned to drive using an old 44 war surplus Willys Jeep during my early teens. It was a "yard" Jeep, but when the lake froze, I had 22 miles of "road" to play on!2) 1970 Ford Maverick, 200 cid (3.28L) Automatic (only Automatic I've ever owned for myself) brand new for $1,950 out the door! 3) 1974 Honda Civic CVCC Hatchback. Like the original Mini, but it came from Japan.4) 1976 VW Westfalia Camper Van for 3 of almost 5 years in Germany. Horribly scary brakes. Other than that small missing feature... it was a great camper mobile.5) 1968 VW Kafer (Beetle) for the last year in Germany... Loved that little underpowered car. Deeeep red with a manual sunroof.6) 1979 VW Golf (Rabbit) diesel.. Shipped it from German factory to Jacksonville Fla. Managed 50 to 55 mpg!!! It got fat tires, all the Golf GTI body pieces and badges and a set of koni shocks all around. Fun car. Really! 7) 1981 Honda Civic Wagon, wife's commuter.8) 1983 Honda Civic Wagon, wife's commuter, twin's hawler and fun travel car.9) 1985 Jeep Cherokee for less than one year... thing had big problem firing up after it was warmed up. Had to wait an hour or more before it would start up again. Was in the shop every other week, so went back to a reliable...10) 1986 Honda all-wheel drive Civic Wagon. 11) 1988 Dodge Caravan short wheel base 4 cyl, 5 speed Manual! 33 mpg highway and a great cross country driver. Our first with Cruise. Magic.12) 1989 Nissan Pickup. Manual everything but A/C and 4x4.13) 1992 Suzuki Swift 2 door hatchback (3 door?). 46 mpg commuter with 4 actual wheels manual everything, but it had A/C! 14) 1993 Honda Civic Coupe EX with "O" package. Still have this car. A toy. One of the best driving cars... I guess I like small light efficient cars. Super suspension and engine. 15) 1995 Pontiac plastic Vantastic. Wife wanted it. The 3.8L push rod V6 was bullet proof and got lower 30s on the road. Automatic, but it was the wife's car.16) 1998 Nissan Frontier 4x4, 4 cyl. manual trans, manual hubs, manual windows! Gets me to work in really bad snow storms, among other duties. 17) 2001 Pontiac Montana, after we left Montana. Another Automatic, but it's the wife's car. The plastic Vantastic was up around 200,000 plus miles, and it became a taxi in Portland, Maine after we sold it! 18) 1999 Saturn SW2 (wagon) 5 speed manual, replaced my trusty and by then really rusty Suzuki Swift in 2001. 19) 2005 Prius. Back to great mpgs! Automatic, but it's the wife's car!20) 1997 Honda del Sol Si in 2006. A toy and really cheap project car. 41 mpg 2 seater with a removable targa roof. Same suspension that's on the Civic Coupe and even lighter! Did I mention I really like small light efficient cars?21) 2008 Pontiac Vibe. Replaced the Saturn Wagon. For those of you that consider Vibes a noisy car, you need to go for a ride in a 1999 Saturn Wagon on snow tires (or any tires for that matter) and then transition to a Vibe. Way, way nicer and really quiet by comparison!Ok, there it is. My head hurts now. I'll go rest a while.
'08 Manual, Sun&Sound, 17" Borbet Type CA wheels, 215/50 Summer Tires... 16" OE steel, 215/55 Snow Tires

1984 Buick Skyhawk - sedan, auto - first car, junior year of HS. Killed it driving through 3 feet of water.1986 Pontiac Sunbird - sedan, auto - senior year HS. Had a slow coolant leak, died while at college and my sister drove it without topping off the radiator.1972 Saab 99 - sedan, 5 speed - back from college. Bought for $900, sold for $900 3 years later. The original owner (a racer) ripped out the auto and put in a manual. Oddly enough i got more complements on this car. Only 4 door 99 i ever saw on the road. Shook horribly at 85+ mph, and electrical was shot.1992 Ford Mustang LX - 5.0L V8 coupe, 5 speed - fun car, not good with a lead foot.1997 Acura Integra GS-R - VTEC coupe, 5 speed - (current) blast to drive. 130K miles, still going strong. Not the best with multiple car seats though.2004 Shadow Vibe base FWD (soon)All were bought used. The sad thing is, I believe I got the most speeding tickets in the '72 Saab. Not the 5.0L V8 mustang, not the GS-R VTEC integra, but the 25 year old saab sedan. Go figure

It handled OK, but what a dog in the power dept and the mileage wasn't that great either. Her's was an automatic which probably didn't help. The '76 Chevette 4dr hatchback was totaled by my 16 year old son in 1985. It was an automatic without a/c and the power was adequate. I forget that I replaced that with a used ('82?) Chevette automatic with a/c - and there is good reason that I wanted to forget that one. It was terrible. I bought it cheap so I didn't lose much when I traded it in for that '86 VW Golf within a year. The Golf was a lemon BUT fortunately I bought a 6 year extended warranty (only cost about $450) that paid for most of the repairs. As for the psychology - the overlap is not clear from the list. We typically would have one small car and one big car. For one year we had two smaller cars - the '01 PT Cruiser and the '03 Vibe but in '04 traded the PT for a T&C. But all the recent T&C's ('96, '98, '04, '07) were the SWB versions (189.3"). Sort of like having a small hatch back and a medium size hatchback. '07 was the last year for the SWB T&C and I wanted one to last me for the next decade. The dealer was anxious to get rid of it and I only paid about $15,500 for it new plus tax. Sold the '04 for $11,500.

My first car was a hand me down from my dad.1996 Cutlass Surpreme. Sadly, no photos, since digital photos weren't that popular in the 90's. Had it till 2001, at which point my mom needed a new car, and I gave the car back to my parents for trade in. I miss it I went and bought a nissan 240z. which i owned for 3 weeks. Couldn't get it road certified, but was sure a lot of fun!Went and bought a 1992 Cavalier Convertible Z24. Was so much fun! and was suprisingly fast! had 420,000km's on it when i bought it for a few bbucks.however, after 1 winter with it, realized that the car just didnt cut it for Canadian life. Bought a 2003 Sunfire brand new. (my first new car). Overall I was dissapointed. Car had a recall a week. Tons of electrical problems which caused bulbs to constantly go out. Had times where none of my signals even worked! Hood shaked violently at speeds of 100km/h or more. it wasn't very comfortable inside, And carrying around my hockey equipment was a pain (trunk couldn't even fit my goalie bag). However, when i bought the 2003 sunfire, I remember seeing the Blue Vibe and thinking "I want this car". at the time, I sat in it and was like. YES! but then i saw the price and was like "NO!" but in 05, my job was much better paying, and i walked into the showroom and there it was. the 06 vibe. in the blue i wanted, with the power options i wanted. I told the dealer what price he had to match and after abnout 2 hours of haggling, he finally just gave me my price. now i am happy. this car better last me the next 10 years, cause i don't want to replace it. There is not a single car on the market that interests me. And it's 100% fully paid off which makes it that much sweeter

...yep, except mine didn't have the black vinyl roof...all the same color. And, ironicly, I still have both the window sticker and both copies of the production broadcast sheets, so I know 'exactly' when she was made (April 7, 1970) and what all options were included....I was told that she's been scrapped, but I don't know if that's true or not.
