Amp Wiring Question

Post by AdmRose »

Which is better, wiring the ground for the amp to the chassis of the vehicle or wiring it to the negative post on the battery? I've heard both and would be interested to know what everyone else thinks as I've never done it before.

Considering you want the ground to be relatively short, I would recommend grounding to chassis versus running all the way back to your battery.

I have done both in the Vibe; the reason I originally ran the ground to the battery was because that was where I measured the least resistance. When I redid my install to add amps I decided to just ground in the hatch. Audibly you will not hear a difference, but you will see a difference in the pocket book, especially if using 0awg for power and ground. In short it doesn't matter where you ground as long as it is a good ground. I will probably get some flac for saying that so I will explain. you want to stay away from any metal that was spot welded to the main floor. While you will get a ground it is not a good ground because you are relying on the spot welds to transfer the ground to the chassis. your battery is already grounded to the main chassis so any thing on the immediate sub floor should be fine. Generally you do want to keep your grounds short because if you have a bad ground you can create heat or induce noise into the system. In the end it would be up to the user you might have a very very minimalistic gain and it would be up to you to determine the dollar cost of the possible gain.
Vibe is gone and will be missed as I've gone country style
