low oil presure

Post by jeff48375 »

have a 04 vibe 115k miles. Driving down the freeway oil light comes on pull over right away as in secs of the light coming on. as pulling over engine begins to knock am too late. had no warning signs did not have any problems prior to this. Any ideas on what would cause it? esp when there was no signs. car ran fine up to this day. Oil was full not a low oil issue.

Too many possibilities to consider. One thing that I question is this: was there ANY engine work of any kind done recently? If so, there could have been debris/dirt, etc. which could accumulate in the oil filter to the point where it restricts oil flow BUT the oil sensor would NOT be able to pick up on this at highway speeds... until you slow down & stop! By then the damage is done. This happened to me LONG ago where I rebuilt a 250cid inline 6, Chevy, and it was running great. Then headed to Columbus & back to visit some friends (250 mile round trip) and when getting off the highway back here in Toledo, all I heard was knock knock knock...... Only then did the oil light come on Tore the engine apart & it was JUNK. You could literally move the connecting rods on the crankshaft 1/8" (.125) when they should be only .003"I doubt this is your problem (and hope not). Other possibilities are unlimited... oil pump failure (the light would have come on immediately and not when getting off highway). Would need additional info to offer more suggestions PLUS I'm not very familiar with this particular 4 cylinder engine. Good luck

engine started knocking right before coming to a complete stop beleive the damage is done. Heard nothing in the engine light came on secounds latter pulled off the freeway and started knocking right before stopping. Engine wasnt running long during the knocking checked the oil level and it was full. it was in secounds that from the time the light came on and the engine started knocking was going around 70 mph. oil was clear not dark no foam looked very clean. open the oil cap looked inside the engine wasnt hot no smoke. no smoke coming out of the car. about 5 min prior to this issue I accelerated to pass a car in order to merge. could have done something at that point but no light no engine work its been a great car to this point. regular maintence work needed and thats all.

If the oil was clear and not dark, it may have been some bad oil? I've never really heard of that, but ya never know. Hopefully some of the more knowledgeable mbrs will chime in. Def strange sounding though.

oh, ok that's good then. Wow I though you REALLY had something wrong if you had clear oil haha, it's been a long day...

An oil gauge might help, to see what your running at, I just installed a sunpro from autozone for $45 with tee fitting from ace.

I'm getting 15-20 psi at idle, and all the way up to 75psi at speed, does anyone else have any numbers?
