Window bolt recall still honored?

Post by cablemonkey »

Greetings all, I've been wanting a Vibe for a few years now, but could never justify the expense so long as my '97 integra gsr was still alive and kicking. Great bachelor car, but not so great trying to fit 2 car seats easily in the back. Well, I now have the option of getting my great aunt's '04 Vibe Base/AT with only 18K miles on it, and it's pretty hard to pass up. Only drawback so far is the overpowering dog smell, but I'm working on eliminating that. One concern i have is that in doing my research i saw notice of the 2008 recall for the window bolts. Does anyone know if the new post-Pontiac GM can/will still honor the recall? For all i know, the work was already done, but I've got no record of it.Also, any other things to look for or consider would be appreciated. So far I've learned a ton from reading this board, you guys are great.

I believe it is, I still keep getting the recall notice. I would take mine in if it were easy to get to my bolts.
Vibe is gone and will be missed as I've gone country style

recalls last forever. They should cover it still, unless the fix has already been applied to that VIN.

Most everyone has answered the recall question, but as far as what to look for...With it being an 04 with only 18K on the clock, check the some of your wear components that the typically wait till later on to check, such as the serpentine belt, gasket areas, they can have a higher fail rate sitting as opposed to the Vibe running and keeping the seals strong. Def check the oil and probably go ahead and change it too. Sitting too long it can sludge up as well. Basically just act like you are buying a car with about 100K and look at all of those things.

Very TRUE I still haven't went in for a recall on my 92 F-150 parking brake wedge It is not a big deal, it was issued in 94 and it's only been 16 years BUT if for some reason I went to the dealer today, they'd fix it! Talk about procrastination to the MAX

Every couple of months I still get the postcard from the dealer with the same recall notice. I figure that if my front windows haven't exploded without warning in the last 8 years I'm probably good to go. Fortunately my Vibe has been really good to me. No major problems/repairs since I bought it new in September 2002. One speaker was replaced under warranty several years ago, but that was the only time it was ever in the shop for a repair. I just fill the gas tank and change the oil regularly and replace the tires and brakes when needed. The serpentine belt started squealing a little the other morning so its time to have that changed and I should have the timing belt replaced too so my valves don't crash into the pistons anytime soon. Even my original battery lasted 7 years despite the car never being garaged and surviving all these northeastern winters. If they still made an '03 Vibe GT today I'd gladly buy another one.

No timing belt, Stang -- a chain. No worries about replacement.

So far I've learned a ton from reading this board, you guys are great. An '04 Vibe with 18K mi. At least your Great Aunt tried to break it in for you. Was it garaged? I would check the tires for small cracks that usually start to develop close to the wheel rim. They can indicate that time for replacement is here. It's normal rubber deterioration over time and really doesn't have much relation to tread wear. The longer the tires are on a car, especially past their due date, the more numerous and also the larger those cracks get. They can start to show up at the base of the raised treads too, indicating even older tires aboard. I haven't looked this up recently, but remember that most tire manufacturers generally give longevety spans in the 6 to 10 year range. If this is going to be your family car, would suggest taking a close look at all the tires, just to be safe. Another thing that old tires do is harden, so they lose some of their ability to stick to the road. That can make braking lengths longer and emergency maneuvers a little more sketchy.Wouldn't hurt to change the oil/filter, air filter, and inspect the spark plugs, just in case. Brake fluid reservoir, coolant levels and condition, including the rubber hoses and the serpentine belt that runs accessories and water pump (as stated in prior posts). Anything rubber could be starting to deteriorate and crack. Welcome to the site and don't forget to post a picture of your "New" Vibe when you get a chance. Getting rid of the dog smell in the cabin is the easy part, just give it a good once over with any quality interior fabric and rug shampoo and let it dry on a sunny warm day. Don't foget to thoroughly wipe down all the plastic surfaces, and inside all the storage compartments, too. Right now, I'm going out the door to try and find any of my Great Aunts, to see if they want to get rid of any low mileage cars!
