Interior Lights

Post by IceCold »

Not sure if this is in the right forum but, I wanted to put in some red lighting down by the foot area of the front seats and connect it to the dome light. Problem is there is no where to splice the wires into, except for the overhead lights, which would be a pain in the (removed). So does anyone has any ideas where to hook the light up to so they turn on when the dome lights do. Thanks!

Thats exactly what I am trying to do but only with the dome lights. Only question is where to I connect the relay to? I tried to hook the lights up to the dome switch. The dome switch has a red with a white light, a red with a black line, a white with red line, white with black line, 2 greens and a black. I hooked the lights up to the two red wires and it worked, but only when the dome switch was off. When the switch is to on, the dome lights come on but the neons go off. I tried a bunch of other configurations but nothing worked. More ideas??? Please help. Thanks

why with the dome lights? look on the steering column theres a plastic cover held on by screws. Unscrew the screws, then the plastic is clipped in just take a flathead screwdriver and pry it loose carefully. All the wires there are 12 volt (the positive ones). Just make sure the wire is positive and not a ground. Also, one or 2 of the wires there are for the horn relay etc so just dont hook it up to those.

He wants extra courtesy lighting, if I'm reading this properly...You might want to reach out for Nova or NSimkins, I know they both have service manuals with wiring diagrams. The other option is to actually run it up to the domes...from what I understand, it's not hard to remove the roof panel or the A-pillar cover...Roof Headliner Removal Instructions: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4600#49772

ThanksOn the dimmer switch, the white with red and the black go to the instrument cluster illumination, so they won't help. The two greens are also associated wiht the dimmer function of the switch. The white with black is a ground. The red with white is a signal from all of the door and hatch switches. The red with black is the output of the dimmer switch that actually controls the lights. When the dome lights are on, this red with black should be a ground. So, if you ran 12V to one side of the relay coil, and ran the other side to the red with black wire coming off the dimmer switch, it should close the relay whenever the dome lights are on.Seems like a lot of the controls in this car switch a ground. I expected them to be switching 12V.

ok so let me get this straight. when the dome light is on the red with black is the ground, but when the dome switch was off, the red with black was the power and the red with white was the ground. is this correct? if so then where locally can I get a 12v power from? Thanks all for the input, you all rock

When the dome lights are on the red with black should be a ground. When the dome lights are off, the red with black will be floating/open, but since it's hooked up to the dome lights (a resistor), it will probably float up to 12V, If you measured the red with black using a meter , it would appear that it was 12V when the dome lights were off, but that voltage would drop (and the dome lights might even come on) if you tried to draw any significant amount of current from it.When a door or the hatch or hatch window is open, the red with white should be a ground. When everything's closed, it will probably either be an open circuit, or may be connected to the red with black wire through the switch unless the dimmer switch is set to OFF.Normally, the ground to turn the dome lights on comes in from one of the door switches on the red with white wire. You can also supply a ground by turning the dimmer switch to on, and in that case I assume the switch gets a ground from the white with black wire. For a 12V source, it depends. How much current are your new lights supposed to draw? The DOME fuse is a 15A, I can't see those two lights drawing anywhere near that much, they just don;t seem that bright. If your lights only draw a small amount, then your best bet might be to run wires from one of the dome lights, and just skip the relay. (At the dome light the Blue with white wire is 12V, the Red with yellow is a ground when the lights are on). If the new lights draw a lot of current, then running them off one of the dome lights would likely blow the fuse. Did the lights come with a relay? Did they come with their own fuse, and if so, what is the rating on the fuse?

The dome fuse runs a lot more than just the lights...it also runs the gauges and the radio...possibly even more...not sure what else it might run though...

ok i got a pretty good idea of whats happening and what to do. I want the lights to come on when the door opens and when I turn the dome switch to on. Basically I want them to act exactly like the dome lights do. So I dont end up cutting a bunch of wires for no reason, which two wires should I splice them in at? The lights are low current, no fuse, no relay. You've been a huge help all, especally joatmon. Thanks a bunch

this is a old thread brought back to life has anybody done an interior light mod yet. I want to put some accent lighting in and i want it to work with the dome lights. Ok, I'm going to pop out the coin holder just below the parking brake handle and hopefully install a switch for some lights in the feet area. Any suggestions on how to wire that? One of the two cigarette lighters? They are 12V aren't they?

IceCold, can you give an update on the Red lighting you wanted to install in the feet area on your Vibe, I want to do the same thing and would like to see how this all played out... thanks Rob (rvidolof@hotmail.com)

Ok, to finish this out can anybody help me find the interior dome light 12V wire without having to remove the top cover and trace the wire down to the dash? Somebody has to know where this wire is under the dash... right? email me... rvidolof@hotmail.com

Does anybody know where to find an aftermarket switch that is like the traction control or Fog lights switch? Essentially I am looking for a switch that will power off when power is lost (essentially, you turn it on if there is power) and it turns itself off if the circuit is broken, you have to push it to power it back on.I found something: http://www.plaza101.com/Daysta....aspx; but I don't think it's what I want, I spent 30 mins searching for this, what are they called?!? rvidolof@hotmail.com
