Just for clarification...

Post by AdmRose »

Since the factory amp has a built in crossover, external crossovers would NOT be needed if replacing the factory front speakers/tweeters but keeping the factory amp - correct? Also, if I am planning on replacing the amp it would be less work to replace it with one with a built in crossover rather then one without that would require external crossovers - correct?

When replacing components in the M&T equipped cars you will still need to us an x-over, the factory tweeter uses a capacitor to block low frequencies, the woofer in the door plays full range. This is a benefit when replacing speakers. Companies such as Alpine spend money on R&D, that R&D eventually comes into the consumer speakers by way of the speaker system you choose, or importantly in this case the X-over network. Speakers are designed to work in a certain frequency range(I.E. even if possible you don't want you tweeters playing 40hz) the Crossover network that comes with aftermarket speakers keep the speakers in a smooth operating range for the most part. the only other thing you really need is a High pass x-over so you can get the mid dialed in so the voice coil isn't bouncing off the speakers back plate.Do they still make amps without crossovers?you will want one with a built in crossover, it will be the simplest. Generally the reason for an external crossover would be better components, more precise adjustments, and maybe you might get a couple more functions that alot of amps don't offer such as phase control. There is a downside to having an external X-over, there is a greater chance that there could be foreign noise injected into the system such as whine or hiss.I guess I could answer the question. Yes it will be less work as there would be less cables to run.

Any amps you'd recommend (or recommend I'd stay away from)? I was thinking a Eclipse or Sound Ordnance.

I always liked Eclipse amps, I always recommend a known manufacture. You always want to shy away from the cheap no name stuff. Even though the price is much more attractive you will pay in performance. You should still be able to find Eclipse amps new dirt cheap as retailers should still be blowing out stock.

Was thinking of either the Eclipse EA4200 or the Sound Ordnance M4075. Eventual plans include a sub in the back and disconnecting the rear speakers. My front speaker setup is in my sig. line and based on that which one of those two do you think would be my best bet?
