Problems going in reverse

Post by silentcodingone »

I have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe with automatic transmission. Yesterday it started having issues going in reverse. At first it would go in reverse but very slowly and would not speed up when the gas was pressed on. You could hear the motor rev but nothing. Then it stopped going in reverse all together. It is now back to going in reverse very slowly. I had the transmission rebuilt about a year ago after it went. I checked the transmission fluid and it is filled to the proper levels. I also have not noticed any leaks. Is it the transmission going or possibly something else? Thanks

So sorry about that. I doubt a warranty is good a year later but worth checking. With the price of a rebuilds so high, pick up a used tranny at a junk yard. You'll save money and most likely end up with a good trans. How does it work cruising in high gear or overdrive? Any slippage? The reverse unit uses the same Direct Clutch as these two forward gears.Does the car accelerate properly starting forward from a dead stop?Dave

It seems to accelerate without issue. It even will reverse without problem sometimes. You are right the warrenty was for a year or 12,000 miles. It has been a little over 14 months. I was hoping it would be something else. The trans is an expensive piece to fix.

I'd get your linkage checked out if it works sometimes. Maybe it isn't fully going into gear.Does the oil have a burnt smell to it and more of a chocolate red rather than a cherry red?It shouldn't cost much to get the unit pressure checked to see if the pressure to the bands is proper when going into reverse.I asked about acceleration from stop for a bad torque converter would be sluggish for reverse or forward motion.Dave

Yeh - sometimes a transmission fix is minor. The company that did your rebuild ought to at least be willing to diagnose it for free.
