Fir the last two days there has been a fairly new gray 4 dr VW Golf TDI hatchback parked in front of my home. It still looks a lot like the 1986 I had. I was surprised to see the new VW Golf on the Consumer Reports "recommended" list, with a reliability grade of better than average. That '86 Golf soured me on VW - maybe it is time to forgive and forget.

Fortunately, absent an accident or theft, I will not be buying any car for quite awhile. With a 15 month old '09 Vibe at 5,300 miles and a 32 month old '07 T&C at 11,000 miles I think I will be out of the market for a few more years.

Interesting how they took a Golf and slapped the Rabbit nameplate on it for a brief revival... Now they're calling them Golf again. *shrug* Anyway, not sure if it's ever a good time to forgive and forget when veedub is involved. I'm sure they're fun to drive, they have personality and a lot of soul but.....

Yeh - with all of Tiger's problems maybe they ought to rename it the "TENNIS".

my roommates have a 2008 vw rabbit only has like 45k miles on it and its a pile. Tons of rattles and noises and the dealer cant even find and fix them. But some how my roommate LOVES it sooo much... feels cheap inside although the red lighting is nice. the ride is hard and bumpy. seats are hard. 1st gear slips like a MOFO. holy crap its bad. I will not and will never buy a vw. mazda has a turbo diesel coming to the US, wait and get one of those.
I like my cars to have reliability much better than average. I will stay away from VW until Consumer Reports says they've been on par with better American brands for three years running.

I know a guy where I work that has a more recent VW Golf diesel. It may run forever, but the repair bills have more than outstripped his fuel savings. I owned 2 rabbit diesels in the late 80's. I know I will never buy one again until they improve in reliability......a lot.

The interior isnt bad, seats are hard but ok, ride is firm but kind of bumpy, visibility is good. The TDI is maybe better in its drive train but idk I still wouldnt touch a vw. What gets me, is my roommate admits to the car having tons of faults and the noises and how it cannot be fixed. but he is on this ranting and raving of vw being the best car ever...even though this is his first and only vw ever... odd kid.Mazda has a new diesel coming out in the US..I'd personally would rather have a ford or mazda.

I'd chalk it up to 'more money then brains' but sadly, this just isn't true....

Of course, I say this as it's in the shop with some tricky alignment issue I can attest, though, if properly babied they will run forever and they are super easy to work on.
