I have a 2003 Matrix, 5sp manual tranny is shot. Does anyone know if I can swap in a 2006 6sp in?Or any other years? If I can is it just a direct bolt in?I also have a 2003 Vibe with a Auto and no problems there.
Yes it the Famous bearing problem. The 6 speeds do not have this bearing issue. So going with a 6speed!Found out the Matrix and Vibe trannys are direct fit .6-speed manual transmission from a 2003-2008 Vibe or Matrix will work in a car that had 5speed.The transmission will bolt up to any 1ZZ or 2ZZ engine and with no modifications fits the 2003-2008
the gear ratios for the two trannies are:6-speed1st : 3.172nd : 2.053rd : 1.484th : 1.175th : 0.92 (overdrive)6th : 0.73 (overdrive)Reverse : 3.25Final Drive Ratio: 4.535-speed1st : 3.172nd : 1.903rd : 1.314th : 0.89 (overdrive)5th : 0.73 (overdrive)Reverse : 3.25Final Drive Ratio: 3.94Note that both trannies have the same 1st gear, and the same top gear, but the final drive ratios are different. Input rpms / (gear * final) = output rpms. Since the 6 speed has a higher final drive, for a given engine RPM, the wheels will spin slower with the 6 speed than with the 5 speed. This will potentially give you more torque when starting out from a dead stop, but will also mean that when rolling down the highway in top gear, for any particular speed, your engine will have to run faster after you put the 6 speed in than it did with the 5 speed, so your fuel economy will likely suffer. Now, that's all fine, someone else can conjecture on how far do you have to drive before the loss in fuel economy costs you as much as another replacement tranny. On mine, I put in a 5 speed from a 2005 Corolla, seems like the bearings were an issue in the 03's more than later years.

Thing is I just cant see my self paying money for a piece of crap 5sp again. The 6 speeds do not have the same bearing issues as the 5sp. Would rather be driving it than busted down with a big repair bill again
