RE: First Vibe Trip

Post by canadavibegt »

I just took my first long trip in the Vibe.. Went from Richmond, BC to visit friends in Edmonton. AB..... i think I put about 4000 Km on the Vibe......I was very impressed with it in the mountains and on the hill (some over 8%) Only had to shift into 5th a few times to keep my speed up or pass. I did notice one strang thing on the trip...... At one gas station super premium (94 octane) fuel was cheap so tried it out.... I got 41 mpg... The went back to about 35 mpg on the 89 and 90 stuff..... So on the way home tried out the 92 octane.... again millage went up to about 38 mpg.... Anyone else ever experience this. This was all hwy cruising around 120 km/h.Anyone else use cruise control on the GT often.... Noticed strange quirk with it on steeper hills. It seems to want to continue to accelerate after the hill levels off and then when it's about 5 to 10 km/h over where it was set its like oh **** and it lets off the gas causing the car to decelerate suddenly... Found it very hard to get ued to... i was driving in a very hilly area.......Everything else was realy good...... Only saw about 5 Vibes the whole trip and 3 were from BC and 2 in AB (one was a new Orange one)..... Friends told me they rarely see them around Edmonton.... No matrix's either.... Very strange....Hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the VIBE.....

Anyone else ever experience this. The manual says the GT requires a minimum of 91 octane (see page 6-4):http://www.mygmlink.com/pdf/go2content/ ... ibe.pdfNot 89 or 90. 90 to 87 octane fuel can be used in emergencies but not for extended periods of time. When you use lower than 91 octane fuel in the GT you will loose power and mileage because the computer has to reduce the ignition timing to prevent detonation on the lower octane fuel. Reduced ignition timing is where the power and economy loss comes from.Stop using low or medium octane fuel. You wanted a GT, so fuel it with what it needs or engine life will be reduced.

I have been getting better and better mileage as mileage increases on the engine. I have never used anything but 93 ocatane in my GT.11.5.1 compression needs it.

Im in a AWD and my cruise does the same thing (typically accelarates 3-4 mph over the current setting), going up hill or after it levels off.Re: 90+ octaine, my WRX would throw a CEL (Check Engine Light) when I used below 90 Octaine. It too required premium fuel.

quote:I ran 87 in my Stang also, got great mileage..Realy I had som many mods on mine I had to switch to the high octane.... i think the Cobra-R kit I installed liked the higher octane cause I never changed the compression in it so must had something to do with the way the cobra-R computer mixed the fuel/air etc....

Hi there,Yeah, had the same issue with the Cruise. Apparently it responds differently to hills. Maybe the reaction time is lowered due to the need for more umph!. It's a bit annoying but I seem to only go up 2 or 3 mph then it settles back down. One thing I was always told was not to use the cruise on hilly roads. Maybe it's benefits are outweighed by the major fluctuation in throttle. I still use it though.I'm not sure how you're getting 36+ mpg in a GT. Maybe it's a metric thing. I'm lucky to get over 30. I'm not all that impressed with that yet, I'm at around 3600 miles now. A few long road trips to come including a trip through Tennesee, West Vriginia and North Carolina. Hope I get better mileage then...Dave

I was a Ford Performance part..... Came with the 70mm mas air sensor, EEC unit and 8 matched fuel injectors (forget what the rating on them was) I think 28 pound might have been 32....??????

This is a combination of City and Hiway but mostly city..... I usually skip gears (unless I am in a hurry) I will shift from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 4th and I cruise in the city (60 km/h) in 4 or 5 th....

Lucky you. Maybe I'm always drivin into the wind. hehe.Nice Vibe. I wanted a Shadow but by the time I was able to buy, there weren't any mono-tones available. (I know yours is the 2-tone but I wanted the mono-tone). The Abyss is nice though. The only one in my town... and I think the only GT here as well. Dave

What did you expect from a high performance engine with 11.5:1 compression in a 3000-lb wagon body? 40-mpg? Not impressed? Give me a break!GM claims 25 city 30 highway for the GT. I say you're getting exactly what they say you would get. You want MORE than that?

wow, relax dude...I'm impressed with canadavibegt's results in MPG. Why would I be impressed with an MPG rating I'm supposed to get?!?! I'm relatively happy with, but I'm not impressed with the 28 mpg average that I get; I'm satisfied with an occasional 30 mpg; I'm very happy when I get a 31 or 32. I'm impressed with canadavibegt's 35+ MPG. Dave

I find it tedious to use cruise on hills. You end up stepping on the gas to help it out anyway. An excerpt from the manual:quote:Using Cruise Control on HillsHow well your cruise control will work on hills dependsupon your speed, load and the steepness of the hills. When going up steep hills, you may have to step on theaccelerator pedal to maintain your speed. When going downhill, you may have to brake or shiftto a lower gear to keep your speed down. Of course, applying the brake or downshifting to SECOND (2) orLOW (L) takes you out of cruise control. Many driversfind this to be too much trouble and don’t use cruisecontrol on steep hills.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

I've been on a few road trips this summer so far (probably 3,000 highway miles) and on nothing but highway I'm 35-36 mpg with the cruise on 75-80 mph -- good stuff.
Shadow Vibe - two tone (almost no need for the monotone in this color IMHO) - slate interior - power package - moon and tunes - abs - 16" aluminum wheels - and the GD on the radio! http://www.cardomain.com/id/db_vibe

I just realized that the gas station i usually go to has 92 octane for the mid grade which is what I have been using.... guess i did that originally cause I had to and just forgot they use the 92 as mid because most of the other stations have 89 as a mid.....Well hope your millage goes up and ya love the Shadow my original choice was Satellite but none were availble in the options i wanted...
