VIN mystery

Post by Tonebalone »

I have taken my '09 Vibe in for service at the local Chevy dealer, as well as the local Toyota shop. Both service desks entered my VIN and the information comes back as a 1.8L base. I have a 2.4L, and it is there in the engine bay plain as day. I bought the car new, and the window sticker information also claimed it was a 2.4L.Has anyone else had this happen to them? My VIN is 5Y2SP67079Z4XXXXX.

Here's how the 17-digit code breaks down:5Y2 = World Make Identifier: " 5 " = U.S. built and the " 2 " = PontiacSP = " S " = S-Chassis; " P " = Vibe FWD A/T6 = Body Stye: " 6 " = 4dr Sedan7 = Restraint Code (SRS)8 = Engine: " 8 " = LAY 1.8L L4 SIDI; " 0 " = LAX 2.4L L4 SIDI.7 = Check digit9 = Model Year 200" 9 "Z = Plant: NUMMI, Freemont, CA468xxx = Production Sequence/Serial Number (my car)...looks to me like they "misread" the VIN code.

Thanks. I figured I had the right engine. Funny thing is my State Farm office also is charging me a premium based on the 1.8L. They must all be using the same faulty database.

...be "careful" with your insurance company's reading of the VIN!...mine had copied the " Z " for plant down as a " 2 " and wanted to know if the car was either (A) Stolen or (B) rebuilt...luckily, I just showed the agent the windshield and she got things corrected...because they (ins. co) will "turn-in" vechicles they think are stolen to the Police, which gets "sticky" pretty quickly, even it's not your fault...especially with all the Pontiac dealerships closing.

Good advice. I did point the discrepancy out to the agent. I am convinced they are all victims of a database error. Probably my biggest problem is if it is totaled; they may only pay out on the base version.
