Not So Good Vibrations...

Post by Bad_Vibe »

I've had my '03 AWD just shy of 3 months, and I love it to death, but two EXTREMELY annoying vibrations have developed since I bought the car and they are driving me crazy. The first is coming from the sunroof - it vibrates obnoxiously while driving down the road whenever the sunroof is closed. If the sunroof is tiled up or opened partially/all the way, the vibration disappears, but as soon as I shut the sunroof, the vibration comes back. The vibration seems to be emanating from the front of the sunroof, and I have noticed that when I push up on the ceiling panel just in front of the sunroof opening, the vibration goes away. The second is coming from the HVAC unit - it sounds like a small lawnmower when on the first two fan speeds, and like a lawn tractor on the second two fan speeds. It also vibrates raucously at idle.Any idea of what could be causing these vibrations, and how I could fix them myself without resorting taking it to a shop or a dealership??? Thanks in advance for any and all advice, GenVibers!

Have you ever replaced your cabin air filter? They can get quite clogged up starving the blower fan for air making noises.Worse, someone pulled it out, never put another one in and now leaves, sticks, mice and all manner of debris are stuck in the blower fan!!Open the glove box and drop it down, there is a little door behind, be careful there may be a lot of stuff on top of the filter, peek in first and if so get a vacuum and try to suck the crap off of the top as you pull it out and not dumping it all down in the hole! There are instructions on how to do this on this site.Dave

One more reason I was never a fan of paying $1,000 extra to have a hole in my roof.

We have an 03 with a sun roof and its fine.Has there been something dropping/put between the roof and the head liner that is rattling? as it goes away when you push up on it.Secondly, is the trim panel around the map light tight?
A fantastic solution to a problem that need not exist!

Djkeev - I will check the cabin air filter today. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the issue, the car is sitting at 83k miles right now and that's a maintenance issue that the average Joe Blow owner typically fails to address.Aussie Vibe - I will take a closer look at the trim panel around the map light, that seems to be where the vibration is coming from.
