Alternate tire sizes.

Post by Dino »

Has anyone tried a 205/65R16 on a 2003-2008 base vibe? Did you have any issues with clearance or rubbing? How about a 205/60R17, same question. Yes, I know it will throw the speedometer indication off. Thanks.

Don't see any problems with fit. I always like including the 235/60 16 tires that one of our Canadian members slipped on his wheels and installed on his '03-'08 gen Vibe. The diameter for that size is a whopping 27.1" ... so if you don't go over that diameter, you should have a good fit. The 225/60 16 is a more reasonable 26.7". A 205/60 16 diameter is 25.7". My 225/50 17 Summer tires measure 25.9". Depending on the tire design, you may find the taller tires much softer... so initial turn in will be a little more sluggish. You can help that by firming them up a bit with higher pressure. Sidewall stiffness varies quite a bit across the tire spectrum, depending on performance values the manufacturer assigns to each individual tire type. The one thing that you will notice with a significantly taller tire is taller gearing overall. Taking off from a stop will require good launch technique if you drive a manual. Your engine will turn a little slower at speed. The speedometer issue can be fixed by using a GPS to measures your actual speed or by using old school math to figure out the percentage you would have to add.
