One thing I don't like so much about my 09 AWD Vibe with a 2.4L engine is the small gas tank, which necessitates more stops to refill on the road. Often when I am on the road, the light signifying that I am near empty comes on. I have gone up to around 20 miles or so after the light came on and was nervous to when it actually would run out of gas, but when I've filled it, it usually only takes about 11 gallons, while I believe the fuel tank holds around 13 gallons. What is the farthest anybody has gone after the light comes on with the same setup as I have, the AWD & 2.4L? How many gallons did it take to fill?

The most gas I have ever put in my tank was 10.9 gallons, and that was after driving for 20-30min on the highway after the light came on.

...I have the 09 1.8L Vibe and the "light" comes on for me at about the same level (~10.5-11 gal.), so it implies they (Toyota) have the computer programmed to turn on the "low-fuel" light when we're down to two gallons of gasoline...one to "drive" to the gas station on, and probably the "last gallon" to keep the fuel pump cool and lubricated (remember its physically located "in" the gasoline in the tank).2 gal (reserve) = 13 gal (total) - 11 gal ("low-fuel" light)

I wish they had a trip computer showing your remaining miles available for this car. Those usually are pretty accurate in my experience. I don't know if there is an aftermarket one of those, but it would be pretty hard to install even if they did, because one with have to tap into the gas line at some point because they measure fuel usage.

I just wish my car would beep or something when the light comes on. Sometimes I just randomly happen to look down and its on.. Not knowing how long its been on.. :S

I have a 09 Blue AWD and I struggle to get 220-230 out of a tank and that is driving an extra 20-30 miles once the light comes on; of course I do drive with spirit. Once the temps warm up and the winter blend is gone, I will give it an extra tank or 2 to re adjust and then I will drive very conservative seeing what actual numbers can be reached.

You must drive with a lot of spirit because I'll usually get 260 or better on a tank and I don't exactly baby it either.

I generally get around 260 miles per fillup on average with my 2.4L, and I'm not a conservative driver (I love acceleration). Often times it's higher than that. Then again, much of my regular driving involves at least some highway driving, so perhaps that contributes to the higher numbers?I've averaged between 23.1-29.8 miles per gallon since I got the car (I track each fill-up). The lowest was not a full tank of gas and was with a lot more stop and start traffic and excessive variations in speed. The highest was almost 100% highway driving on a cross country road trip. Generally I'm around 25-26mpg and fill up between 10-11 gallons on an empty tank... that means it's usually about 250-286 miles between fill-ups.

So your numbers probably make a lot of sense.

My 2.4L is not AWD and is a manual tranmission, but I have driven about 50 miles past the light coming on. It's a bit scary. I try not to do it but again today I will have probably driven about 50 miles since it came on.However, I don't think I've ever put over 12 gallons in it. I keep record of it so will check today.

Last summer, for a few tank fulls, I drove my Vibe like, well like a little old man. I got 40 mpg from a 9.8 gallon fill up. I used the same fuel nozzle at my "corner" Shell station, 6 miles down the road and filled it to the neck, on several consecutive gas stops. I drove speed limits... on my commute... 35 to 50 mph. Super gentle acceleration and long coast downs, when I could get away with it (kept a sharp eye on the rear view mirrors). Front tires were set to 42psi (I usually run 40psi) and 40psi rear tires (normally 38 or so). That ended up being 392 miles between fill ups. Most of the Summer I recorded 36 to 39 mpg. But I found out I could nurse 40 miles out of a gallon of gas. Not too bad. I switched to full synthetic oil last Fall, so I'll see if I can't top that mileage this summer. I know, I have the wimpy 1.8L with a 5 speed manual, but it can be pretty frugal! Sudden acceleration... Not Likely!

Hey guys, whoa, let us remember that this question was for those driving an 09 (I'll add 10) AWD Vibe with a 2.4L engine All of us 4x2 / 1.8 engine / stick people should just shut up and not voice what WE get. He doesn't care, he probably isn't interested either.Dave
...the answer is: two gallons times his mpg, like this:2 x 20 mpg = 40 miles to empty2 x 21 mpg = 42 miles to empty2 x 22 mpg = 44 miles to empty:...et cetera:2 x 99 mpg = 198 miles to empty...(ha,ha)!...of course, if he "floors it" so that he can get to the gas station quicker (before the tank goes empty), he'd probably better only assume HALF the mpg value that he normally gets....you get the idea.

Yesterday I only put in 11.7 gallons. Twice I have put in 12.9 gallons.

No? I think that with the proper driving techniques, you could probably do better than lower to mid 20s with a 2.4L Vibe. It may have a lot to do with tire pressures, too. I see a lot of soft (low pressure) radial tires out there on the roads, sucking down more gasoline than they should. I doesn't take much time to keep tires at optimum pressure. I check mine once a month, but more often if I drive long distances at higher speeds.

My 2009 Vibe GT took 11.9 gallons to top it off at the most. I usually "push it to the limit" when it comes to waiting to get gas. One time driving a previous vehicle, I spit & sputtered my way into a station and JUST made to a pump. Lucky for me I was on the CORRECT side where the nozzle & fill cap were located! Anyways I 'd say you can go 50 miles or so till your riding on the fumes. My wife, on the other hand, it's CRISIS time when that low fuel indicator comes on! If you look at my "fill-up" log visit this neat new site I discovered http://www.mpgtune.com/fillupH...=4740 you'll see where several fill ups were well over 300 miles. That's where I was driving alone! (nice !!!) The lower mileage fill ups were when the wife was with me. Thus the difference between the two of us!

That's not wise in a fuel injected vehicle where the electric fuel pump lives in the fuel tank itself. It relies on the fuel to help keep it cool. W/O enough flowing around it, the pump could burn up.
