Chassis lube, manual tranny - How to! (picture heavy)

Post by star_deceiver »

For the 09-10 Vibes, earlier models may be diffrent!Get out your grease gun and aerosol can of white lithium grease (and a rag...)!You will get dirty, deal with it!Get a needle adapter, it helps!Let's start with the transmission!Hood latch mechanismCrawl in with the pedals/Time to pull some trim piecesAll 5 doorsSeat tracksEmergency brake, use it or lose it...Electric Power Steering motor and u-joints. The worm gear unit looks sealed so unless you plan on taking the dash apart there's not too much you can do with it. The u-joint should be dissasembled to grease it properly.I'm sure that there's a thing or two I missed... but the wife's off work so car-time is up.

Nice. I hate that every interior panel on these cars seems to be designed with the flimsiest, crappiest little plastic tabs you can imagine. They break if you look at them too hard.

Yup... the silver ring around the outer part of the shifter boot...After the first one broke I yelled at the second one not to break... it didn't listen! The 3rd one came out easily... I attribute that to keeping my mouth shut and not looking at it. It stays together fine but when I have the whole black plastic part out around the shifter, I'll glue the damn thing in (blindfolded and gagged of course)!

Do you enjoy taking your car apart? Nice write-up and all but seriously, some things are better off untouched despite what the manual states. I've had two cars over 200,000 kms without doing any of these things and only had one problem with one of them not related to seized hinges or pivot points. The most I do is a silicone spray on door hinges if they start to make noise. Your Vibe is going to be a rattle trap if you do that on an annual bases. I believe they put most of that in the manual just to get people into the service department and not so much for an actual need for that much maintenance.
