..suck.We've been through 2 in three years (one $60 piece of junk that never worked well even when it was new, and a Hoover Fusion (plus!) that just crapped out on us). I'm hesitant to throw down a bunch of money on a new one only to have its' cheap, flimsy plastic pieces fall apart in another 8 months or so. Anyone happy with what they're using? We're considering one of these:Panasonic MC-CG885 - retails for pretty high, but Amazon has them for $247.43 with free shipping.

I bought the OG Dyson shortly after it came out and I love it. Still works like a champ. I know they have different models now and you could probably find one to suite your needs, but yes they are on the expensive side though. If allergies are an issue one of the best, but by far most expensive, is the Rainbow model that uses water. That's the one we had growing up when my allergies were the worst and it was excelent on keeping dust down. It's "bag" was water there for emptying the "bag" never affect my allergies!!

We had a Panasonic from 1988 to 2006. Was super. Got rid of it when the hose had too many holes, and was tired of the sticky duct tape. Bought a Royal in 2000, and have never had any problem. Replaced brush bar and belts.
You get what you pay for. My parents have had a Panasonic canister vac for awhile and it worked great. They upgraded to whole house vac system recently. In these instances you get what you pay for. So you can coughup the hundreds for a Dyson that everyone swears by, get the Shark Navigator for about $200 (unless you have a coupon for BB&B or Kohl's). Or call up Oreck and ask for the XL.
My mom had a Kenmore canister that had run-on. Turn it off and it would still growl and wheeze. She wasted money on extended warranty for the stupid thing and they never could figure out why. It would flip over, and it's a pain in the rear to lug up a step(s) I have an upright I bought from wallyworld, a bagless washable filter Eureka Pet Pal, I think I paid $85. To me that was a little steep, but I wasn't paying more than $100 for a vacuum. What it picks up still amazes me, so I'm happy.http://eureka.com/index.php?op...id=61Just don't accidentally run over any rug fringe, etc. or...insty belt replacement (it comes with one spare)
We've had this Sears Upright for almost three years. Works as good as the day it was new. It uses bags, I feel that the bagless units are crap and while impressive to watch the dirt swirl around and you empty the cup, they never tell you about the big $$ HEPA filters that they need to have replaced, sometimes two or three of them! We had several at work, they are all dead, I've upgraded to bag units with much better results.http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_1...nmoreWe have a four bedroom house, grandchildren and a shedding Golden Retriever. No regrets what so ever. No belts to replace, it has a circuit breaker for the beater bar motor. No services done outside of replacing bags as needed.I'd buy another without hesitation. It has the tools on board with a hose.Dave
So much for the recommendation I was about to give on my Kenmore Canister vac from Sears Have had it five years and no issues. Use it for pet hair and all. It's a Progressive "Sedona" model...go figure.
We had a Hoover power drive that was a treat to use, low effort, great cleaning.... had it for ~10 years before it died. Fell victim to the Dyson hype. POS. Cleans no better than the Hoover, hard to manouver, & too tall.... won't get under our kitchen cabinets, etc. It's a $500 $100 vacuum cleaner. If you (or anyone) are in the SF Bay area.... mine is yours for that $100. It has very low miles.

KIRBY!!http://thevacuumcenter.com/kir....htmlthis one is reconditioned but a good price. I got mine new for a few dollars more. you will never buy another vacumn cleaner.
I'm still using the Hoover we (when I was still married) bought back in 1968 when we moved into our new house. Have gone through a few belts since then, but it still works like a champ.
I'm using an Oreck XL2 at home. I got that because it's lightweight and pretty powerful and quieter than others. My friend recently got a dyson something and that thing SUCKS! lol man the suction is so powerful it's tiring using it haha

But you will buy a new vacuum when you get tired of pushing, pulling and carrying that thing around. We just got rid of our Kirby for that reason and got a Hoover Platinum. Too early to tell how it will hold up, but CU rates it as one of the best. It isn't as quiet as we had hoped it would be, but it is much, MUCH easier to use.And it comes w/a small canister vac to use w/a hose and attachments.

Some electronic part took a dump on it early on, Sears sent it off and repaired it under warranty. But it hasn't missed a beat since then. I too like a vacuum with a bag. Probably one of the best vacuums I ever used was one of these Electrolux canister vacs... Those things REALLY sucked! My folks bought one in '77 and I think it's still in the garage used for vacuuming out cars...

My vote is for spending only $90 at Lowes on a Bissell Momentum. It is very well designed. The only negative is when you use the hose to do the stairs, the model is so light, that it will tip backwards on you. Other than that minor inconvenience, I would rather buy 4 at that price than invest $500 on a Miele or Kirby or any other Euro-junk. Just make sure you don't buy a Hoover. Hoover has two assembly locations. One, I believe, is in on another planet where the quality control is horrendous. I was warned about this from a vacuum store. Our Hoover Windtunnel 2 was the most worthless piece of junk we have ever owned. The vacuum store, which sells many models, says that Miele is the best. However, since they use neutronium steel and have jet engines on board, you need to be Superman to lift, move or pull the thing while cleaning. Who needs the ab lounger when you can get all the exercise you need by owning a Miele!!
I'm a polar opposite when it comes to vacuum cleaners: I buy a new one (cheap one) every 6-months. As I've got two little kids...two little kids that like to throw food, occasionally puke chunks and launch Play Dough about...I find it easier (and more sanitary) to just rotate through a vacuum periodically. WallyWorld has this $38 Bissell that's been in their inventory for two years now; I'm on my fourth one (I think). After six-months of duty, I buy a new one and rotate the old one out to the garage (for car cleaning duties). Then the old garage one goes out with the trash...where some cheapskate inevitably grabs it before the trash guy comes. BTW: These cheap Bissells, which I use everyday to vacuum, hold up surprisingly well for being constructed almost completely of cheap plastic.
Awesome. I didn't pull the trigger on any one vacuum yet, and then today, randomly, the wife and I go to a rummage sale at a nearby church. In the corner, tucked behind some junk, I found two different vintage vacuums with all (and I mean all) of the original attatchments. We're told that they both still work, haven't tested them out yet.First is an upright Kirby from the 50's or 60's maybe? Looks kind of like this:Next is a big ol' Electrolux commercial canister vac, again with all the nifty little attatchments. Can't find a pic of a similar one yet, I'll just snap a photo of mine later on. Paid $23 for the whole lot. I'm kind of excited to get home and run 'em through the paces They're used, but appear to be in pretty good shape. Hoses are good, attatchments all seem to be present, we even have the original attatchment carrying cases with the little strap handles and whatnot . Also came with a box of what looks like spare parts or replacement Kirby heads? Not sure yet. Gonna clean them up later and give them a test drive. Some people swear by these beasts, we'll see how they hold up. I may end up selling one on Ebay if anyone's interested

Buy a cheap BAGLESS vac... Seriously... I have a POS 80$ bagless and I haven't used my Kirby in 6yrs... never will pull that TANK out of the garage again... Bags are for suckers anymore... I'm sure the Dyson is great, but I can tell you the simple bagless ones are hard to beat.. (they pull dirt off the wood below the carpet I swear)
