One voice coil or two?

So my Memphis Car Audio Power Reference 15" subs have dual voice coils, but today I pulled them out of the enclosure to find that whoever put them in...only wired ONE. So I hooked the both up on both speakers and it is VERY noticeably louder. Any risks in doing this? I mean they have no weird sounds and they're not bottoming out, so I assume it won't kill the subs, but I can't help but wonder why they were left undone

So there were no wires going to the other one? Or did they just vibrate free?

There were no wires. Whover put the subs in the box just wired up one side of the sub.lol. So I went to Radio Shak and grabbed a couple feet of wire and fixed it up. DAMN they're loud too. My vibe's gonna fall apart 8(

Just make sure that if you've wired it to run 2ohm that your amp is stable at 2ohm so you don't fry the amp. I'm sure you already know that, but since I hasn't been mentioned i figured i'd throw it out there.

The VC's of a DVC sub are designed for flexibility.. The subs Impedance is VERY important to the amp.. They both work OFF of one another.. The impedance of the sub (it's ohm value) dictates HOW MUCH power the amp will produce.. As with anything that produces power, it will produce MORE when it is closer to a DEAD SHORT (a dead short being the largest value) So, with that, wiring a sub... A DVC (dual voice coil) sub that is D4 (dual 4ohm coils) can be wired for 2ohm operation OR 8ohm operation.. but not really 4ohm operation... lol.. 2 - 4ohm coils in parallel (+to+, -to-) will HALF it's impedance, making it act as a SINGLE VC of 2ohm... 2 - 4ohm coils in SERIES, DOUBLES impedance... so when wired +to-, +to- you would end up with an 8ohm sub... Most amps rated for 4ohms, will produce almost double (some claim more) at 2hms... In turn, will produce roughly HALF at 8ohm... SOOOOOO... when you wired in the other coil of the sub, you likely wired to 2ohm, telling the amp to produce MORE power... This is usually good, but WATCH OUT, run out of power TOO much, and you will cook your sub... mark my words...
