clearance on winter tires

Post by bikeman1 »

Discount Tire Direct is offering a $50 rebate on clearance of all stock winter tires, including Yokohama, Falken, Pirelli, Hankook, and others, on top of their regular prices and free shipping and on top of other rebates that can be combined. On the Yoko Ice Guard in 205/60/16's, the price after all rebates is $61 a tire delivered. That wouldn't be my favorite winter tire but those are 90's (or 80's) prices. The General and Firestone winter tires are great deals, but not that good. Wish DTD carried the Altimax Arctics. So, if anyone in Virginia with a GT is staring at those 24" snowdrifts and thinking of taking the plunge and saving those alloy wheels.....snow may run into March this winter on the east coast. they also sell 5x100 steelies for $56 and have a $50 rebate on those too. And they mount and balance for free. So I think you could get into a set of winter tires + rims for $400 delivered AND mounted/balanced. Wow. The only catch is you have to sign up for and pay with a Card Care 1 card. But there are no fees - just don't be late on your payment because they carry like a 27% interest rate.

I picked up a set of Yokohama W-Drive 205/55/16 from them with a $100.00 instant rebate and a $40.00 mail-in rebate last Sunday. $456.00 of tires for $316.00. The deal ended last Monday.

that's an awesome deal. These rebates are all being picked up by DTD and are being targeted at some of the pricier brands that don't move as quickly. But their strategy is, clearly, they don't want any winter tires in inventory in March and they are discounting their markup (which is lower than most anybody's in the first place). Makes sense as they would have to move them and store them till next fall. With the winter tires its like buying straw hats at Christmas.I do think the Yokos (the Ice Guard) are overpriced compared to the Generals or Firestones. Haven't used the Winterforces but the Altimaxes (which I have) just chew up snow and spit it out. They are dandy tires, with the variable-angle siping. I use a friend's 4x4 F150 and I feel way more stable on snow in the Vibe.
