DIY intake question 05 vibe base model

Post by carfreak967 »

just had 2 questions for the experts on here, i know i usually lurk, but with my regal awaiting a new block i am driving the vibe as my mom drives a rental (thank god, lol)but knowing me, anything i touch i immediately have to find a way to make it betterthe vibe is an 05 base model (2zz?) with manual tranny and now some new 7 spoke wheels (i was proud of her choice lol)now we have been talking for a while about getting a nice intake on her car, add a few HP and hopefully help out a mpg or 2, but she does not want to spend $180 on an intake, so i tried my own homemade DIY solutionsthe only issue i run into with these cars is obviously the MAF sensor is bolted into the intake lid, which makes making your own short ram intake very difficult.bieng pretty knowlegable about tuning vehicles (mostly gm v6 applications) i know that relocating that MAF sensor requires much care in choosing a pipe diameter that is as close as possible to the original diameter, as to keep intake velocity constant, so that the car will not run rich (if the pipe is too small) or lean (if the pipe is too large)i work at an auto parts store so i grabbed one of those "spectre" MAF intake adaptors to play around with.it actually has the proper plate to mount this toyota style maf sensor, and the section of pipe is about 3" OD, which is SLIGHTLY larger than the stock section of pipe.unlike much of my forced induction experiances, i know that a slight skew in fueling is not nearly as lethal with an N/A vehicle as with supercharged or turbocharged applicationlol, so after my rant, my question is thisobviously the Cosmo racing intake has a plate to adapt the stock MAF sensor, and many of you run this intake without problems (i assume)well i figure if my section of pipe is comparable to the section of pipe that is within the cosmo intake, then my MAF sensor will react essentially the same as the cosmo.so does anybody know the diameter of the cosmo intake? or do they taper the intake down around the maf to correct the MAF hz values?if the pipe is 3" throughout, i figure ill just couple this adaptor and cone filter onto the intake on her vibe and run this as a short ram intake, but i figured i would ask the experts opinions first, to see if i am doing anything foolish.so any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated, or any tips from those of you out there who have tried a similar solution yourselves, chime in, im open to suggestionsshe has a K&N drop in filter now, and in the past i took the bottom of the box out, and clamped the filter in the top half of the box and turned it sideways to make a kind of open element intake just to see how it sounds, and to be honest, i loved it!people asked me what kind of exhaust my moms vibe had, lol, and i showed them my ghetto intake. so i am looking forward to having that deep snarl once again, but in a more legitimate fashionso after all the info, i guess im asking if a 3" section of pipe is too large to put this MAF sensor in, or will it run funny or damage anything?and also perhaps if you guys know the size of the cosmo intake, or any problems i might run into in my persuit of a dirt cheap intake.thanks guys!-Ryan

Well, i don't have the answer's for you, but lovemyraffe has a cosmo SRI for sale. Since it's off his Vibe already, maybe he can do some measuring for you and supply you with the diameter(s) on each end and length and stuff.

Did you notice any performance change? I might try that. Is it dangerous? Idk why it would be...And as far as the intake goes, I think it is 3 inches.
