BF Goodrich Traction T/A tires

Post by Dragonsm »

Just placed the call to order in a set of BFG Traction T/A's for my wifes car. In the past 2 weeks, one of her tires has been steadily losing air here in the MN winter and some uneven wear. I was going back and forth on a few different brands/models and ended up chosing the BFG's. Possibly will be getting in tomorrow and maybe even have the tires mounted tomorrow evening or New Year's eve. I'll give an update to her feelings and my thoughts on the tire as we continue to blaze through winter here in MN.

they are a good tire, pritty quiet, wear is decent, sucks in snow more than 2 inches. In MN i would think most if not everyone has a set of snow tires for the winter.

nah....no snow tires here. All the cars I have ever owned, I have only had a set for one of them (an 85 VW Golf). My wifes car is an AWD so that really helps out with the winter handling over a FWD vehicle. (plus she isn't a real stomp on it and get up to speed fast kind of lady....) If the snow gets to deep or weather to bad (like the storm that hit us this past week) we'll load up in my pickup then.

Just a thought....Perhaps you have a leaky tire valve? You can buy a tool that tightens the shrader valve.

Yep, I own one of those tools and I did check it. It could also be in the bead, but the tire in question does show the most of the uneven wear. Regardless, the tires were about wore out so hopefully these turn out to be a nice replacement. The tires did arrive today so it is just a matter of seeing if I can sneak her vibe down to the dealership tomorrow morning for an hour and getting them replaced. (and then sneak back over there sometime in the next week just to do an alignment on it)

Personally the only good thing I've heard about/seen with the trac T/A's is that they don't chunk out or wear funny if you run a lot on gravel like most similar tires would. I wouldn't run them myself. At least they look good...

My brother went to UMD up there in Duluth. Snow tires would be a definate bonus on the steep streets up there.

Pretty flat terrain out there northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul, so no hill climbing... just drift busting. I put snows on my wifes car and on my car, for the added safety and security they provide in the slick stuff. We have to commute on quite a bit of mushy wet snow and ice. Anyone around here that stays on summer or all season tires, ends up paying the price. I see way too many accidents and off road crashes each Winter. Reasonable driving and good snow tires would help hold down a lot of that. The first year that I had my Saturn wagon in '01... I had just put a set of brand new all season tires and tried them on snow. That commute that night was scary. Very little directional control and poor hill clibing performance. I got a set of snows and what a difference they made. This will be the last Winter season for these tires... after 7 winters and lots of miles they are starting to give up some of their grip. Still better than all-seasons... on the way home a couple of days ago, I was able to snake my way past 3 vehicles (2 cars and one truck) that could not climb a small snow covered rise in the road.

It's not about GOING in the snow, it's about STOPPING.... AWD does nothing for stopping (unless you know techniques to help slow you)Put snows in an AWD Vibe and leave the truck at home when it gets bad.. Do what you like, but snows are much more about stopping, than they are about going...

I vote a BIG no on the T/A tires. I had a pair 15 years ago and they were very noisy, and are prone to "flat spots." I know the price point is $30 different, but the Michelin Primacy MXV4's are the way to go. Check out tirerack.com ratings before making any decision. I just put on the Michelin's and they were outstanding in the recent 20 inch snow here.

Just wanted to see how these tires are working for you now. Thinking about buying a set myself.

Do what you like, but snows are much more about stopping, than they are about going... Sublime, up there in Hickigan (where the heck is that...) you don't have any real hills and I'd agree with you. But here in WV the hills are the deal. Going is a big deal to get to the top.....)(well, the stopping is on the way down.....)Anyway, we had a real dump here last weekend, 16-20". Lots more than we usually see. The red vibe chewed most of it up. I was wishing I had gone for a little extra clearance (I got 205/60's). Once the snow gets +2" above gthe oil pan, its a bit like surfing in yogurt. Maybe I need to put a steel bumber and a winch on.....Anyway, I am looking like a genius for buying snow tires and predicting the weather. People are starting to ask me for point spreads on basketball games. I owe it all to you Sub.....Sorry for hijacking your thread Dragon. On the T/A, see my post earlier today on the BFG rebates at Discount Tire Direct. May or may not be the right tire but the prices would be right. But I do agree with Keith and Sublime that snow tires would be a better avenue for a Minnesotan.BM
