I posted information about the last Vibe we built somewhere...not sure where that post went at the moment. What I posted was the last body built with the last Vibe VIN issued. However, because they do not necessarily travel in order throughout the assembly process, that last body built was not necessarily the last Vibe that came off the assembly line. They get scrambled around in paint and assembly, and then if they have any defects and have to come off the line for that, they can be sitting offline for a while.

Nothing to do with the last car produced but I noticed the Pontiac Dealer on 222 in Pennsylvania, south of Kutztown has a Black one on the lot, I think it is new for it is prominently displayed with the new cars.Just in case anyone is looking for one. It was there Saturday 01/30/10Dave
I read in one of the recall articles that Pontiac pulled "the last two dozen or so Vibes off the lots." So, perhaps one of the newest genvibe members would then own it.

I'm single, have no kids, so I don't have anyone to depend on me. I kind of had a feeling something was going to go down a couple of years ago, so I've been kind of getting myself prepared just in case. When it does go down, I'll have all my debt paid off, except for the mortgages, 2 cars paid off and in decent working condition, whatever else I could possibly need or want for a while. I was blessed with good health, so if that keeps up, the effect of loss of insurance should be minimal. I've been going to school for a while, just taking a class or two at a time. The plan is to continue to go fulltime and get it finished up. NUMMI was approved for the federal Trade Adjustment Act, which assists with retraining for displaced workers, so that can help to cover the costs of school and extend unemployment benefits for up to three years, help pay for health insurance and some other things. I honestly think this should be available to all workers in similar situations as we are no different. However, this package from the feds is only available to workers who have lost their jobs due to their work being moved out of the country. The plant as a whole? We seem to be holding up ok, but we're still a couple of months out. Right now, the union and company are negotiating over a retention package. Theres plenty of information in google news about that as well. Things got kind of ugly at a union meeting a week ago and that found its way onto youtube and into the news. Unfortunately, already had one suicide a couple of days before Christmas. Looks like it was more personal related, but those close to the person also said the upcoming loss of work did play into it as well. There were plenty of those when GM closed that plant the first time in the 80's.Neither the union or company are telling us much about whats going down with benefits, severance, unemployment, etc., so theres all kinds of rumors and speculation going around. Most have never been through something like this, so a lot of people are understandably nervous, upset, scared, etc. There are many that have been there up to 26 years, so theres plenty to be nervous about. However, we continue to build quality vehicles for Toyota (up to 1700 per day), and hopefully that continues through 4/1. There is/was a documentary on HBO last year (I think it might be on demand now) called The Last Truck about a GM assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio that was shut down. They followed employees through the last few months at that plant. A lot of what they were going through is the same we're going through now.In general, NUMMI and Toyota have been good about assisting employees through this (can't say the same about GM as they bailed while in bankruptcy and left NUMMI and Toyota to figure things out on their own...although I understand its a business decision). NUMMI has been offering all kinds of classes for several months such as job search, resume writing, networking, financial info, they did a career fair and an education fair and there are more to come. They told us over seven months in advance so we have time to prepare, and Toyota has been sending plenty of work our way so we're working fulltime plus a good amount of overtime to make some extra $$$ (although overtime in this business is a given). Toyota is definitely overproducing the Corolla and Tacoma right now, which goes against one of the Toyota principles of waste (muda) in overproduction. Just take a look at how many Corollas are on dealer lots next time you drive by. Apparently they're preparing for production to move to Japan, Canada, and Texas. Not sure why, but we will be the only plant in North America producing Toyota vehicles next week as the rest are shut down due to the recall. We are not sure if or how that recall will affect us. Last we officially heard, its business as it has been (definitely not usual) until we hear differently.I've gone on long enough about this in here and its way off topic, but thanks for your concern. Feel free to ask if you want to know anything specific.

I can't speak to whats going on in other plants as I'm not there. NUMMI is scheduled to take orders from Toyota through 3/31/10 and the last vehicle is scheduled to be built on 4/1 or 4/2 (our last day of work is 4/1, but since a regular shift runs past midnight, it is possible that vehicles will be built into 4/2). The truck side of the plant is scheduled to finish a couple of weeks sooner than this, presumably so they can start moving equipment out to San Antonio. Again, I'm not there, but San Antonio is scheduled to start producing Tacomas in August and has or is in the process of hiring people for this. Corolla production is going to an existing plant in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada where they already build the Corolla and Matrix and to the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Japan where they are able to build just about anything. On an interesting note, Toyota is so established in North America now that there will be several suppliers in the US that will continue to build Corolla parts, ship them to Japan to be assembled on cars there, and then the completed Corollas will be shipped to the US. I don't think this will last too long though. Toyota sells a lot of Corollas in North America and these two plants will most likely not be able to keep up with future demand. The Corolla is/was scheduled for a model change in a couple of years. Toyota has a brand new assembly plant in Mississippi that is just sitting there 90% completed. It is my assumption that Toyota will soon be announcing that Corolla and Prius production will be moving to that plant and will begin production with that new model for 2012 or 2013. This sounds like a long time away, but it does take a while to get all equipment moved into place, set up, programmed, and ready to produce vehicles.
