5 Speed Swap, I know, I know...

Post by DrunkenMonster »

I would really love to do it in the 4 years I am overseas. I have already done it in a 90 240sx. I understand the concept and what is involved. There are a lot of Toyota's that are 5 speeds in the UK and junkyards for that matter. My question is besides the Matrix what else are compatible and for what years. I have 4 years to mess with it and I am bringing it back to the states, so I will have it for awhile. I appreciate who can help me.

in Vibes (and likely other toyota quality vehicles) 2003 was a bad year for 5 speed reliability, so avoid that year. I currently have an 04 corolla 5 speed in my 03 vibe

It was done on newcelica.org or 9thgencorolla with parts needed, pics and maybe a half assed write up.. good place to check for sure. So funny story kinda.. so mm 2 years ago I bought a MS3, it was my only car, first stick. So then last year it was totaled and I got a cobalt SS turbo which is also a stick..then this winter I got a ford escape as my DD and winter driver. So Im driving my escape home from work Friday and all of a sudden I day dream about a clutch. I approach a stop sign and my left foot goes pumping air and my hand is trying to shift into N hahha then I laughed at myself (my escape is obviously a automatic). Remembered I was in the escape then did it again!! man what a sign of missing a manual gear box.. If you have the time and are able to get the parts do it. I LOVE driving stick, but I will admit in rush hour its a pain.

In theory, they'll both bolt right up being the zz series engine. That being said, I have no idea about the differences in body design, clutch/flywheel specs, ECU/PCM, RHD Corolla vs. LHD Vibe, what will bolt up directly and what will need careful pummeling with the sledge hammer....Either way, it will make for one hell of a thread here when you decide to bite the bullet and put some fun back into your car!Automatics:
