Extreme film on windshield

Post by 09vGT »

I made the mistake a couple of months ago of putting Rain-X on the front windshield. I only kept it there for a while because it started to streak at night and make it difficult to see with my wipers going. I bought some Bon Ami Cleaner, which is suppose to remove it, and I'm still getting a really bad film and streaking of water. I can't tell if there is still Rain-X on there or if I need to replace my blades. I put some Bosch Icon's on around 6 months ago.. and don't want to pay 60 bucks if my wipers don't need to be replaced.. What do you think? Thanks!

I use rain-x on every car I detail and its amazing how some people don't even know what I did. Witch craft. Did you try cleaning the blades?

Yeah, I cleaned the blades.. I like it on the sides but not on the front and back.. the back wiper streaks horribly even after cleaning the blade and window.. with a new rear wiper..

I use rainx more than I use my wipers I have never had it streak, did you use the bottle or the wipes? did you wipe it after you apply?

Yeah it was clean before applied. Windex won't remove it. Neither will lighter fluid. The only thing that did was the Bon Ami. Ill try to put on some more tomorrow to try and clean it off.. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

I think Rain-X is amazing stuff. I've never had it streak on me.

Seattle, WA... ect) it's a great investment. But with the sand in winter and the bugs all other times of the year with not too much rain it just makes a mess of things!

When I bought my first new car - an '86 Mitsubishi, the factory wiper blades left such a nice clean swipe it was one of my favorite things about getting a new car.I had some Rain-X left over from the prior car, a car that had a burned out wiper motor so I'd been using the Rain-X w/no wipers.I decided to combine the best of both worlds and put it on the new car. From then on, the blades would not wipe clean. It left "micro" droplets across the entire wiped surface.I think I just lived with it for a year and then by the time I bought new blades the Rain-X had worn away and the new blades worked well again.

Today was warmer than usual so I went out side and scrubbed as hard as could with Bon Ami. I did it twice, and did the wipers too. Now it looks like its gone. HOORAY! But I won't really know until I drive when its raining at night. I guess I'll try new wipers if it is still smeared...

Don't feel bad, I hate Rain X. Whether I am applying it right or not I don't care, it was streaky and left nice rainbows no matter how hard I rubbed it. It was like wiping a counter with oil. So I ditched it.If you want to get rid of it, do 1 of 2 things:1) White vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle and newspaper2) 000 (read triple zero) steel wool with a foaming spray window cleaner. Spray on liberally, wipe with steel wool gently, then spray again and clean with microfiber.

I've used Rain X for years. It's a pain to apply and polish, but the only time it streaks... when wipers are worn out. For long trips... I do 2 coats before shoving off and that way, it usually lasts the entire trip. It's nice not having to use wipers on the highway in any season. Check your wipers. Even the better brands only last about 6 months or so, before UV and contaminants start to degrade the wiping edges. Another reason that streaks form when the wipers are used... hard water (mineral deposits) spots on the windshield. They really make a mess on glass surfaces.
