I know, I know, I've been a Twitter user for over 3 days (but less than 5). Baby steps, I've always been kind of anti-twitter but I figured I should join the 21st century.

It's not me!!! After my myspace got hacked, I'll never do any of those stupid things again. Everyone's been bugging me to do facebook, but it's just not worth it with the no-life criminal lurking...

Lots of people are posting they don't "get" twitter. Well, I didn't either (and I'm only 23!) until I had to get involved for my job (I'm a multimedia designer, and part of my work is managing social media for companies). Now I understand the context where it is actually cool, relevant, and dare I say useful.SO...Twitter 101 (from a person "of that generation")1) Twitter is only as useful as the people you follow. Follow lots of awesome and interesting people/companies/news sources/bands/politicians/commentators and you will like twitter a lot, and feel it is extremely useful for getting information. Follow a lot of people like yourself, or have a very small follow list, and you will at best feel like it's yet another Facebook (if you have one) or at worst be really bored.2) Most people are not interesting or awesome enough to follow, yourself and myself included. 3) Again, unless you are one of the above mentioned "awesome" sources, twitter is less about what you say and more about what you hear. I get a lot of political news this way, but it would also be great to track favorite bands, companies, local news, FORUMS LIKE THIS ONE *cough cough* and just have it all delivered to you. Think of it as a super-condensed RSS feed.4) Say something sometimes, though, or at least Re-Tweet (copy and paste something interesting someone else said, to spread the word) so you can help spread information. If you never tweet, you look like one of those creepy spam accounts.5) If you want to become one of the "awesome" people, you need to tweet frequently with stuff that people actually want to hear. At least once a day, probably 4-8 times per day so you stay on people's main "feed" page (people who follow lots of other users probably have a whole new feed page every hour if the other users are active). Posting links to outside content is usually the best bet, you can also use stuff like Twitpic to link to images. It helps to have a specific topic that you want to tweet about (this is really similar to wanting to run an awesome blog)Hope that helps.
