Sure doesn't look like $5500 worth of damage

Post by knaffie »

Had a little accident New Year's Eve. Don't ask how it happened, I'm not admitting anything. EDIT: No I didn't drink and drive.Anyway, got the estimate today. With mostly used parts, the estimate came in at $5500. $500 for a new front bumper cover. $500 for a new wheel. $300 each for two fender flares. $50 for a new VIBE emblem on the door. Absolutely insane what they charge for some of this stuff.I opted not to have the $$$$ shop do the work. I'll probably have my neighbor do the work and hopefully have enough left over for some new black rims for the summer. :D

That sucks, when I wrecked my vibe I was quoted 14,000 dollars to repair so it was totaled out.

Looks like most of that work is in the quarter panel, keep us updated on how it turns out.

$5500 seems about right. You will have to repaint almost the entire drivers side.Glad it was too serious.

I would say get another quote from another shop. Seems pretty high to me.

geez, your car is only beginning to look like my wife's '03. People often ask: "did someone try to pry open your back door with a crow bar?" Now you know why my wife has yet to drive my '09 after 15 months of ownership (and never will!!)

Mirror sliced, windows don't line up along the top of the door, door & quarter panel dents and some plastic off. What kind of fix are you going to do? Used doors and some rear quarter panel body work? Something like that would leave lots of money for grippy winter tires and some summer wheels as well!Since you don't drink and drive (Super excellent choice, by the way ) why don't you go ahead and 'splain' to us what caused this unfortunate damage? Stuff happens to everyone that drives in less than ideal conditions. No one got hurt, other than the car, so that was a good thing.

As far as fixing it, I'm not sure yet exactly what will be done, but I'm not taking it to the $5500 shop. I'll probably end up with two used doors. They can save the rear 1/4 panel and just push that dent out. And they can save the structure inside the rear door that is dented up with a little work on the frame machine and some patching. My neighbor fixes cars way worse than this all the time, so I'm not worried about it.I already have brand new winter tires, which are awesome (Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3). I am hoping to have enough left over for some black wheels and summer tires!

Weeeellllllllllllllll........................Driving around 11:45 New Year's Eve looking for a parking spot downtown to see the fireworks. Snowing like crazy with about 8" on the ground already, so I can barely see a damn thing and the Vibe isn't exactly getting around too well because its all fresh and there are hardly any tracks anywhere. Went through town, then turned left onto a "really wide" road I had never been on before. Driving down it all alone, no street lights, no cars around that I can see anywhere. Assumed it was a typical road with one lane each direction and a center turn lane, so I was driving in the far right. Wife spots a parking spot on the left and points at it, but I'm almost past it already. No cars coming in front of me, so I turn hard left into the turn lane and instantly BANG as Caliber bounces off my side and goes spinning out of control.Turns out it was a 3 lane one-way street and there was a guy approaching fast from the rear in the lane to my left. I had no idea he was even there and turned right in front of him. Don't know if he had his lights on or not, how fast he was going, or anything else, but it doesn't matter, it was clearly my fault and he could not have done a damn thing to avoid piling into me. I was cited a C/I for "improper lane usage". Hoping to go before the magistrate and bargain to pay a larger fine and get the points revoked.Damn it anyway. :bangs head on wall again:Figures I drive 200+ miles a day normally at 85+ MPH and I'm putsing around like an old man at 20 MPH and screw up.

important thing is you are all OK Well, maybe not the car, but it seems like compared to what it could have been, it is "merely a flesh wound"
