This may be rehashing old posts... but...CT., I agree with you about OEM parts in general but as one who is strongly allergic to dust, I don't think that furnace air filters would be the right choice (or work at all) for keeping out fine dust and organic particulates. There are furnace filters and there are furnace filters but the "el cheapo" 1" x 3'x3' panels are like MERV3. Anything Merv 4 or less will let particles finer than 10 microns (0.01 mm) pass. Things finer than 10 microns include pet dander, insecticide dust, smog, fine inorganic dust, viruses, wood ash, tobacco smoke, spores, bacteria and pollen. Pollen doesn't get pulled until MERV 6 or better. As far as changeout goes, you can replace them as often as you like but cheap furnace filters are too coarse to keep out allergens if you did it daily. Some furnace filters are much finer (not the cheap ones), but then if you cut your own, it would be difficult to a quality seal and the air and particulates would just go around. But hey I've seen amazing things done on Youtube with a Dewalt hand grinder....From my experience (and the nose knows.....a little bit of fine dust will set loose my sinuses), one doesn't have to replace cabin filters anywhere near that frequently. Once every two years is fine for town driving, once annually if you drive gravel roads. People who sell filters will tell you twice that frequency. If you are doing it anymore frequently, the filter getups you are using are probably just not working in the first place. The stock cabin air filters are the equivalent of about MERV 8-9 -- that gets it down to 1 micron or so, will hold back pollen -- and to get air to pass through, it needs a positive seal around the element. I really don't think home cut filters would be very effective, even if you had the right media Cabin air filters do get sold at rip off prices (I have seen them at Advance Auto for $35!), probably because people don't know much about them. and they are not easy to find. But they can be also had for $11 or so on Amazon, which is a bearable tariff, at least for someone with allergies.....the cheapest I have seen is $5 for one that fits the 2006-07 Tacoma and Matrix. More expensive than a $2 furnace filter but geez....

Here is an old post from genvibe all about thishttp://forums.genvibe.com/zero...age=2and if you want tech details on these cabin filters, Micron Air makes most of them irrespective of who brands them Quote, originally posted by Caretaker »The cabin air filters are easily cut from furnace filters. Go and buy any multi pack of one inch thick furnace filters and cut them yourself. The cabin air filters get dirty very quickly and need to be replaced about 3 times a year. Don't waste money on OEM parts.
