2009 Vibe AWD Rough idling?

Post by sreeni.k »

I have 2009 AWD Vibe with every option possible included. It has only 9000 miles on it- from 5K onwards it started exhibiting rough idling. At any stop sign if i leave the car in drive you can feel the engine idling everywhere including steering. Its annoying so i took it to GM maintainence- they looked at it 5 minutes and said its OK and no engine codes are found. It was not like that when i bought it and dont think within 5K it will start behaving like that. The only thing which coincided with this thing was an OIL change - and i asked for high quality synthetic and i allways use premium grade fuel. This is my first new car and it drives well and handles snow pretty good - but this thing is really bothering me. Any suggestions - ??

Should still be covered by warranty. Even though it isn't throwing a code, I think they should still fix it.

Vibrating as: You can hear the dash and your fillings rattle or is it a slight pulsing through the wheel? As it's an auto, I would assume that there would be some vibration when stopped in gear. What is the idle speed when this happens and does it happen when the car is cold and still warming up? How about when fully warmed up?

I also have a 2009 2.4L, not the AWD model. I have less than 1500 miles on it, and have always noticed a slightly rough idle, which I also feel through the steering wheel. I am used to 8 cyl and 6 cyl engines, so I figure that it's due to the 4 cyl. When the the car is put into the park gear, the idle is smoother and no vibration is felt in the steering wheel. My idle on the tach. seems to be in normal range, so I think it's just the normal idle of this car.

We'll need more accurate description. My wife's Matrix AWD exhibits slight vibration at idle. It is cold now, so the rubber engine mounts are harder and will transmit more vibrations into the cabin. If the tachometer needle is steady, then what you are experiencing is normal.

For the 2.4 - I find that these are a slightly rough idling engine by nature. Mine's like that, as is my brother's (although his is manual so it's felt less), and the one I test drove also felt the same. In colder weather it's more pronounced. The 1.8 is smoother and quieter at idle - as would be expected from a smaller displacement 4 cylinder. Once off idle, the balance shafts in the 2.4 seem to do their job - and it's very smooth from about 1,200 up.For the 2007 - was your code P0303? Was the coil proven to be bad? A number of things could cause a misfire there - including the plug, boot, injector, or mechanical issue (low compression). At least the ignition parts can probably easily be swapped between cylinders to see if the problem "moves". If it does not - I'd then do a compression test to see how even things are between the cylinders - and if that's good, I'd suspect the injector or wiring.Hopefully the compression test won't come out the way mine did on my 2002 Sunfire about 3 years ago. I had the same kind of irritating misfire code being set - and didn't even think of it being internal. Finally after exhausting all other options, I did the compression test to find #3 having only about 75PSI of compression - compared to 180 on the other 3. I had a bad valve guide, which allowed the valve and seat to get pretty messed-up, eventually burning the exhaust valve. Not a nice thing to find - but I wish I had found it before buying an injector I didn't need (plus the work of installation). Moral of the story - do the compression test!Good luck!John

I was thinking later on the 2007 - maybe it's in need of a valve adjustment. A compression test would probably help to indicate any serious differences there too - so it may be worth trying...I was forgetting that it can be done on these cars. Everything else I've owned for years (with the exception of my old slant 6 Valiant) has had hydraulic lifters - automatically adjusted.John

I too have a 2007 Pontiac Vibe 1.8 lt w/54000 miles on it.Last week the SES light came on. Temps outside have been in the mid to high 80's. Took it to be repaired & that day the temps were in the 50"s & 60"s. They couldn't get the light to trigger although the code PO353 was in the system. Was told to bring it back if there continued to be trouble. Light back on 2 days later. Temps in the 90"s. They replaced the #3 coil. Next day light back on. They kept it overnight said they diag & found Powertrain Control Module (PCM) shorted. #PO535. Replaced PCM & programed FD3C3. So far no SES light. We'll see how it goes. Thanks Homers in Port Richie. After reading this I took it to the repair shop w/me.

So far my Vibe is running O.K. after the PCM replacement.I called Pontiac today. I was wondering if I should have had to pay for the Coil replacement. It wasn't the problem the PCM was & that was covered under warranty. They are checking into it. Also I noticed yesterday after I got the car back, a 1/4 of the readout on my radio was no longer lit. I called the dealership & they didn't think it was related to the work they diid. But it was working fine when I took it in. The 1st 2# of the time aren't lit.
