New Keyfob?

Post by 21Mustang »

I just got a 03 Vibe GT and it only came with 1 key and a keyfob. However, they are not the same- the key is for the ignition only and doesn't unlock the doors. Do you think it is better to get new keys made for the doors to go with 2 new ignition keys I just had made, or can I get a couple of fobs and have them programmed for the doors? I am pretty sure Idon't have analarm on the vehicle. Thanks!~Dan

That's strange... THey must have either replaced the ignition or all the other locks. Not sure why they couldn't match up the locks... I wonder if a dealer can run the VIN and cut a new key that works with the locks then somehow rekey the ignition so everything's the same? That's where I would start... Keyless entry is nice but it would be good to have a way to manually unlock your doors (that doesn't involve throwing a brick through the window) in the event of electrical failure. You can have (I think) up to 4 fobs total programmed and they're plentiful on ebay. They can be programmed easily by yourself.

First, welcome to the sight and congrats on your new car!Are you sure the non-fob key doesn't open the doors too? Mine does but I have to have it in just right for it to work. Also, if you order some remotes, check out this thread for something cheaper then the dealer: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=33088

Unless the previous owner rekeyed just the ignition or just the doors, the key should work for both. Like the others have said, sometimes you might have to work the key for it to work in the door. The only time I've ever used the key on the door it took a minute for it to work.

Yeah there are a couple things that aren't quite right about the car, I think it has a shadier history than the carfax or title showed.. that said its a great car and I love it. I'll look into the extra fobs. I don't think a new ignition or rekeying the doors is where I want to spend money. Thanks for all the info everyone~~Dan

Oh yeah, I'll check the keys again too. BTW, the locksmith I talked to said to make sure to keep the locks lubricated- once or twice a year squirt some teflon or graphite in them to keep them free of water, and turn the key to keep the locks in working order for good measure.~Dan
