i saw this on the seattle area news last night. they said dealers are importing canadian made vehicles and selling them with a full factory warranty. the thing is, the warranty is voided in the states if the car was made in canada. some dealers arent telling the consumers this. i know i wasnt aware of it. one way to see if your car is canadian is by looking in the inside of the door frame. if its candian it should have a black and white maple leaf sticker. they also talked about turning back the odometer. they said alot of us dealers will have canadian dealer will roll back the odometer being before importing then to the states. the reason is because here it is a felony, and in canada is something close to a misdermeaner(sp).maybe this is old news i dont know, but like i said, it was news to me. just thought id share

Where the car is made has nothing to do with it. It could have been made in the U.S.A. and shipped to Canada and then shipped back to the U.S.A. to be sold down there. Reason being, it seems the price of vehicles in Canada is less than American pricing, based on ability to pay. If they tried to charge Canadians what Americans pay for cars, they would sell very few cars in Canada. The chronically weak Canadian dollar created this problem. Many manufacturers have tried to remedy this problem by refusing to honour warranties of vehicles that have be cross boarder sold.
hmmm, i dont know then. the station did this big report with actual people that it happened too. maybe i missed something in the report. sorry for any confusion.

When I had my 98 T/A (which was made in Canada) and I needed warranty work there was no problems. As long as it says Pontiac on it and is under warranty it should'nt matter what country it was made in.

I remember several years back Americans from Buffalo, Detroit area would come up to Canada and buy the car then drive it back to U.S.( The reason was of course cars are cheapers in Canada. )I think what happened was that dealers / manufacturers decided warranty would be void if the car was " illegally imported "Water-goods cars, if you will.

I quote from the article:quote:We analyzed a database from the Washington Department of Licensing and discovered nearly 2,000 cars a month are being imported into Washington state, most from Canada. There's nothing illegal about it unless the dealer doesn't disclose it's from Canada. So it's perfectly legal to bring in a Canadian car, in my understanding. But you have to pay to have certified for American roads I guess -- odometers converted, relevant metric gauges converted, etc.

quote:Only thing you have to change is the instrument cluster, if you really want to do it. And most clusters are $500 bucks or so. Good call. But Canada has different standards for emissions and stuff -- might have to pay to have it "clean air" certified or something, yes/no?

quote:Not in Michigan... We do not have to get emission tests done.. Just buy them and drive them. Silver, my friend, you SUCK!!!! j/k dude. But seriously, I know there is such a thing as "California emission" and "new jersey" emissions packages...so perhaps it depends on what state it's imported into.

Maybe they took that off, it's been a few years now. I wonder how many people actually buy cars from across the border though.

quote:i found the story i was refering about.http://www.kirotv.com/consumer/2188424/detail.html You're right. The article said the dealer told the customer she had no warranty because her car was 'made' in Canada. The dealer was wrong and gave the customer false information and the journalist that wrote the story reported bad information.
